Job Overview

Position Summary

The Application Release Specialist is tasked with overseeing the strategic planning, coordination, and execution of all stages and activities related to the deployment of applications from development environments into production settings. This role involves facilitating release meetings and developing deployment strategies based on contributions from various stakeholders across multiple teams. The Application Release Specialist also plays a critical role in executing the releases, identifying priorities, conflicts, dependencies, and potential risks associated with each release.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates strategic release planning sessions with essential stakeholders to determine the optimal sequencing of release packages. Ensures that potential issues and risks are recognized, understood, and managed effectively to minimize impact on scope and timelines.
  • Documents and defines the release strategy for each deployment and/or modification to production, including scope, schedule, deliverables, and rollback procedures. Reviews this strategy with key stakeholders.
  • Acts as a crucial quality checkpoint throughout all release phases. Conducts readiness assessments, milestone evaluations, and business go/no-go reviews.
  • Supports the execution of releases by monitoring and driving each phase of the deployment process. Validates the release as it progresses through various stages and testing phases, notifying relevant stakeholders of any errors or issues that arise.
  • Oversees release decisions and processes with a focus on cross-departmental implications.
  • Maintains a comprehensive release management schedule for product-specific applications.
  • Coordinates and executes all non-production releases to various testing environments.
  • Manages and executes all production releases with a focus on readiness for deployment.
  • Provides coordination and communication throughout the deployment process and post-deployment activities.
  • Proactively manages environments to ensure readiness for release, including necessary backfill.
  • Collaborates with Enterprise Product Support and the Monitoring Competency Center to enhance monitoring, documentation, and post-deployment validation processes.
  • Works alongside the Quality Control Center to ensure compliance with auditing processes and release management standards.
  • Coordinates and executes all production releases, engaging with Enterprise Architects, Application Architects, DevOps, and Technical Leads to stay informed about evolving architectural landscapes.
  • Mentors other Application Release Managers and contributes proactively to the Release Center of Competency.
  • Participates in architectural review board and cloud governance discussions as required.
  • Supports zero-downtime and blue-green deployment strategies.
  • Maintains and supports CI/CD and Azure pipelines, contributing to disaster recovery exercises.
  • Creates service requests for production changes and secures necessary approvals.
  • Engages in change management activities, such as deployment planning meetings, to gather relevant data and information regarding releases.

Qualifications

  • Experience in software release management coordination or related process management roles, with 2-6 years of previous experience in release and/or project management preferred.
  • Proven ability to coordinate cross-functional teams towards successful task completion.
  • Demonstrates high integrity, self-direction, and the ability to work independently.
  • 4-6 years of experience in an information systems operations environment, focusing on systems analysis or development.
  • Preferred certifications in Azure (Fundamentals, Admin, and DevOps), with a requirement to obtain Fundamentals within a specified timeframe.
  • Experience in software or DevOps development is desirable.
  • Familiarity with software lifecycle management tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, ServiceNow).
  • Experience with source control management systems (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to present information effectively to all management levels.
