The Community Support Assistant is a part-time 10-month responsible for supporting the mission of University of Saint Joseph and the Division of Student Affairs. This position will work collaboratively with a team of student affairs professionals on emergency response, policy enforcement, conflict mediation and facilities maintenance after business hours in our residence hall communities.

The Community Support Assistant should be a high energy, positive individual that can work well on a team and independently, and is a quick problem solver. This person should have a student-centered mentality and passion to work with college residential students. This position serves in the on-call duty rotation and involves high student contact, which includes evening and weekend hours. Schedule is Sunday – Thursday from 8:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with the Residence Coordinators and Director to assist with management and performance of the Resident Assistants during active duty hours.
  • Provide duty coverage Sunday – Thursday from 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. each week.
    1. Carry duty phone during on call hours
    2. Respond to any incoming calls or text messages received and provide support as needed
    3. Notify Administrator of any higher level concerns, incidents or transports/assessments of students
    4. Call on/call off Resident Assistants on Duty at start and end of shift
    5. Review Resident Assistant duty log and submit own log to Administrators at end of shift
  • Follow direction of administrators and/or emergency personnel and collaborate with campus partners and community resources to respond (Public Safety, AMR, WHFD, WHPD) for backup or high level emergency situations
  • Write incident reports regarding incidents if necessary and refer to appropriate office
  • Complete full rounds of interior of all (6) residence halls on campus at least once per shift
  • Contact student emergency contacts in case of student transports or arrests
  • Respond in person to incidents involving students as needed. Requests to respond to incidents may come from Resident Assistants, Public Safety or Student Affairs Administrators. Assist with managing incidents, collecting information, or de-escalating incidents as necessary or as directed by campus partners.
  • When not actively assisting with duty needs, employee may be asked to assist with other tasks including, but not limited to;
    1. Reviewing residential work orders in eRezLife and inputting into facilities work order system
    2. Time permitting review open work orders to check on status and close if necessary.
    3. Provide lockouts for residential students
  • Supervise up to (15) hourly student employees (Duty Assistants).
    1. Ensure DAs are reporting for their nightly shifts
    2. Manage DA weekly schedule in Microsoft Teams/Shifts
    3. Alert Director of Residential Life regarding any performance related concerns with DA role
QUALIFICATIONSEducation & Experience
  • Preferred minimum of 2 years of work experience in residence life, student development, and/or university setting
  • Bachelors degree preferred but not required; preferably in fields such as criminal/restorative justice, social work or secondary education.
  • Certification or training in emergency medical response, de-escalation or mental health intervention is preferred but is not required.
  • Comprehensive understanding, appreciation, and support of student life at a small, private institution and a commitment to improving the lives of students.
  • Have acquired knowledge, experiences, and involvement in student development, counseling students, and conversing with parents.

  • Possess impeccable judgement, tolerance for ambiguity in diverse situations, ability to resolve student issues and crisis situations effectively, and commitment to the student affairs profession.
  • Ability to embrace and support a culture of collegiality, diversity, equity and inclusion, and demonstrated understanding of and strong commitment to customer service and a student-centered experience.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
  • Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management). Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner
