Job DescriptionJob Description

The primary responsibility of the Elevator Mechanic is to assemble, install, repair, and perform regular maintenance on traction elevators, freight elevators, chairlifts and dumbwaiters. Once equipment is in service, the Elevator Mechanic is responsible for maintenance, repair, and modernization of older equipment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Installation, Assembly and Maintenance

·         Read and interpret blueprints to define the layout of system components, frameworks, counterbalance rails, motor pumps, cylinders, plunger foundations, and select installation equipment.

·         Assemble and install traction and hydraulic passenger elevators, stair chairs, and dumbwaiters determining layout electrical connections from blueprints. Installation may include steel frameworks, tracks, cables, counterweights, pumps, motor foundations, guide rails, elevator cars, elevator walls and doors, and control panels.

·         Cut prefabricated sections of framework, rails, and other elevator components to specified dimensions, using acetylene torch, power saw, and disk grinder.

·         Drill holes in concrete or structural steel members with portable electric drill.

·         Secure anchor bolts or welds brackets to support rails and framework, verifying alignment with plumb bob level.

·         Install outer doors door frames at elevator entrances on each floor of a structure.

·         Install electrical wires and controls by attaching conduit along shaft walls from floor to floor pulling plastic-covered wires through the conduit.

·         Attach guide shoe rollers to minimize the lateral motion of cars as they travel through shafts.

·         Connect car frames to counterweights, using steel cables.

·         Bolt or weld steel rails to the walls of shafts to guide elevators, working from scaffolding or platforms.

·         Position electric motor on top of elevator shaft using hoists cable slings.

·         Install push-button controls and other devices to modernize elevators.

·         Connect electrical wiring to control panels, electric motors, and install safety control devices.

·         Test newly installed equipment to ensure control specifications are met (i.e. elevator stops are at proper level).

·         Check to ensure that safety regulations and building codes are met, completing service reports to document conformance to standards.

·         Inspect wiring connections, control panel hookups, door installations, alignments, clearances of cars, and hoist ways to make sure that equipment will operate properly.

·         Locate malfunctions and determine causes of problems in brakes, motors, switches, and signal control systems using test lamps, ammeters, and voltmeters.

·         Operate elevators to define power demands and test power consumption to detect overload factors.

·         Adjust safety controls, counterweights, door mechanisms, and other components (i.e. valves, ratchets, seals, and brake linings).

·         Disassemble defective units, repair or replace parts (i.e. locks, gears, cables, electric wiring, and faulty safety devices).

·         Lubricate bearings and other parts to minimize friction.

·         Maintain log books that detail all repairs and checks performed.

·         All other duties as assigned.
