POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position will Lead the Habitat Project department for the California Deer Association (CDA). Project Manager reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. Project Manager is responsible for the successful administration including, but not limited to, oversite of on-the-ground implementation of environmental and natural resource projects (including watershed restoration to benefit wildlife habitat as well as vegetation management), outreach and education, forest fire prevention, fuels management, meadow restoration, forestry, grant writing, creation of CEQA and NEPA documents, GIS mapping work or other projects that CDA may undertake.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

  • Coordinate all activities of projects, create and follow timelines, create, develop, monitor and follow budgets, create environmental CEQA and NEPA documents along with staff, monitor progress of projects, prepare bid packages, inspect for design adherence, track and direct activities of consultants and contractors.
  • Complete all project-related administrative tasks, including creating and signing reports and invoices to funders, contracting with subcontractors, produce and maintain complete and accurate project-related documents. Ensure adherence to all contract funding terms and conditions.
  • Procure goods, materials, labor and services for projects, following Federal and State laws (including prevailing wage requirements).
  • Manage field staff for related project work, job duties, while creating a team environment for growth and education.
  • Monitor PTO per organizational policy for CDA field staff.

GRANT WRITING, COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS & INTER-AGENCY RELATIONS:

·         Design projects.

  • Seek out and write grant proposals to fund projects.
  • Develop Cooperative Agreements for project work with agencies.
  • Coordinate with local, state or federal agencies involved in projects.
  • Network to establish and promote contacts and positive relationships between agencies, NGOs, the public and the State.

COMMUNICATION & PLANNING WITH CDA LEADERSHIP:

  • Follow Board directives with regard to seeking out project opportunities and overseeing project implementation to conform to CDA mission and goals
  • Developing county-wide and regional plans that facilitate project identification, prioritization, planning, and implementation
  • Make recommendations regarding project implementation.
  • In coordination with Executive Director and staff prepare long term strategic planning, annual work plans and annual reporting
  • Prepare progress reports on project activity to ensure that CDA is fully informed of project status. Attend board meetings as requested.
  • Provide necessary project financial data to Accountant for monthly financial reports to Board.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH ACTIVITIES:

  • Participate in outreach activities (media contacts, attending stakeholder meetings, staffing project related community events, etc.).
  • Represent and promote CDA the community at all times.
  • Develop and deliver educational programming (e.g., educational resources, workshops, demonstration projects).

 Other duties as assigned by the BOD or Executive Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in the execution of grants and contracts.
  • Experience and knowledge in accessing federal, state, private or foundation funding sources, detailed grant writing, and contract creation and interpretation.
  • Experience working in project management, with demonstrated experience in the implementation of "on the ground" resource related projects, CEQA and construction management
  • Highly proficient in Word, Excel, Power Point, email, Internet research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing, communication with the public, grantors and other resource professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate with private landowners, private contractors, non-profit groups and local, State and Federal agencies.
  • Valid Driver's License

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Natural or Applied Sciences (e.g. Watershed Management, Biology, Agriculture, etc.), Public or Business Administration, Construction Management or equivalent education and experience.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience planning conservation, restoration, or stewardship projects, with an emphasis on urban forestry, landscape ecology, or arboriculture preferred.
  • GIS capabilities.
  • Knowledge of local area geography and area environmental and resource issues is preferred.

The successful candidate has the ability to multi-task, think and act "on the fly" as project circumstances change often with little notice. The ideal candidate is an experienced project manager and communicator who is passionate the mission of the California Deer Association.

Position is full-time salaried (exempt). Evening, weekend work and travel required occasionally to attend meetings, community engagement or trainings. A variety of field work is a part of the job and the ability to work in varying terrain in varying weather conditions is required.
