Work Hours: 40 hours a week

GENERAL PURPOSE


Mechanic II

Perform skilled journey level tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of county mechanized gas and diesel equipment. Perform mechanic duties in the county maintenance facility or in the field.


Mechanic III

Perform skilled master level tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of county mechanized diesel and gas equipment. Perform mechanic duties in the county maintenance facility or in the field. Act as lead worker for the county maintenance shop.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED


Work under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED


Mechanic II, may provide immediate to close supervision to Mechanic I for project-based work. Mechanic III, may provide immediate to close supervision to Mechanics I & II for project-based work.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Perform preventive maintenance and make repairs to vehicles including transfer station and facilities, i.e., trash compactor, pit doors, tire shredder, and other equipment, i.e., snowmobiles, ATVs, etc., for various departments, i.e., Sheriff, Weed, etc.; maintain internal combustion engines, carburetors, transmissions, differentials, air, turbo, super charger, and hydraulic systems (open and closed systems), electrical, computerized control systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, suspensions, brakes, tires, exhaust, etc.; perform emergency field repairs and service.


Monitor inventory of service materials and parts, i.e. oil, filters, welding supplies, iron, steel, etc.; perform as department purchasing agent and place orders of materials as needed and approved; may perform as a parts runner as needed.


Perform troubleshooting and analysis of malfunctions using various technical and computerized testing and calibration equipment as needed to assure safe and efficient operation of county motor vehicles.


Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, components, parts, accessories, and equipment; assure proper function of vehicle radios and communication equipment.


Perform general vehicle inspection and certification; checks and maintains service schedules consistent with manufacturer specifications; fill out time sheets, work orders and other documentation.


Assist to maintain shop layout; assist with parts and general supplies and assure general shop, equipment and inventory security and control; clean shop area, tools, and equipment to maintain safe work environment; perform general shop and facility maintenance including electrical, plumbing, waste oil furnace operations, etc.


Attend various schools and training programs as needed to develop and maintain skills in equipment maintenance.


Operate heavy equipment as needed to transport, troubleshoot, and relocate machinery or equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Mechanic II

1. Educations and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school; plus, completion of one (1) year of specialized course work providing technical training in diesel and automotive maintenance and repair and computerized diagnostics or welding.

AND

B. Five (5) years of experience in major repair of a variety of gas and diesel equipment.

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.


Mechanic III

1. Educations and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school; plus, completion of two (2) years of specialized course work providing technical training in diesel and automotive maintenance and repair and computerized diagnostics or welding.

AND

B. Eight (8) years of experience in major repair of a variety of gas and diesel vehicles.

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.


2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Working knowledge of the design, adjustment, operations, maintenance, and repair of diversified mechanical and electrical equipment including light, medium, and heavy gasoline, and diesel engines; the material and tools used in equipment maintenance; anti‑lock braking systems; road emergency service equipment and methods; computer diagnostic processes and procedures; safety practices required by state and other laws.


Journey level skill in the use of mechanical tools, material, and testing equipment (manual, technical and computerized); skill in welding.


Ability to diagnose complex and non‑routine mechanical and electrical defects and determine parts and adjustments necessary to repair equipment; communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees of the department.


3. Special Qualifications:


Mechanic II


Must be an ASE Certified journey level mechanic.

Must possess a valid Idaho Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six months of hire.


Mechanic III


Must be an ASE Certified Master level mechanic.

Must possess a valid Idaho Class "A" Commercial Drivers License.


4. Work Environment:


Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Must be able to push/pull/lift a minimum of seventy-five (75) lbs. Communicating, hearing, and seeing required for completion of essential functions. Common eye, hand, finger, leg, and foot dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, and guided problem solving. Occasional travel in automobile or equipment required in job performance. Some daily aspects of the job pose threats or hazards capable of producing severe physical injury.
