Building Maintenance Technician II or III - Department of Public Works (DPW)

The City of Falls Church's Department of Public Works is seeking a dedicated full-time Building Maintenance Technician. Join a dynamic team and benefit from a comprehensive employment package.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the upkeep, repair, and modification of municipal buildings and equipment across the city.
  • Manage labor and material cost estimates, develop plans, and ensure high-quality workmanship in all maintenance and construction activities.
  • Supervise the operation and upkeep of boilers and related equipment.
  • Lead a small to moderate-sized team, working independently while reporting to the Facilities Operations Manager.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Planning, organizing, and evaluating the work of maintenance crews handling HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire systems, and security systems.
  • Coordinating schedules and supervising staff to achieve maintenance and repair objectives.
  • Collaborating with other city departments or tenants as necessary.
  • Estimating costs for labor and materials.
  • Responding to and investigating emergency maintenance calls.
  • Maintaining job reports and cost records for division work.
  • Managing budgets and providing recommendations for field issues.
  • Ensuring excellent customer service and effective communication with various stakeholders.
  • Performing additional related tasks as required.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of building maintenance and repair practices.
  • Familiarity with standards in various building trades.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems, including HVAC and fire safety systems.
  • Knowledge of contracting and relevant building codes.
  • Proficiency in plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations and utilize various building trade tools.
  • Capacity to plan and direct the work of skilled and unskilled laborers.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Capability to evaluate work performed by construction teams.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment, including snow removal machinery.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of high school education with additional vocational training in maintenance.
  • Experience in building construction and maintenance, with a background in a similar role.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain necessary facility-related licenses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of college education.
  • Strong background in mechanical engineering and HVAC.
  • Possession of a Master Mechanical License and Universal refrigerant recovery license.
  • Commercial Driver's License.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time role, operating Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Compensation & Benefits: Salary ranges from $51,424 to $73,589, based on qualifications. A robust benefits package includes health and dental insurance, pension plans, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, paid time off, and more. City uniforms are provided for on-the-job use.
