Idaho Falls, United States Aalo Atomics Full time

Company Description

Aalo Atomics, headquartered in Austin, TX with an office in Idaho Falls, ID is dedicated to making nuclear energy affordable and safe for widespread clean energy use. Our goal is to provide abundant and dependable clean energy to power humanity for generations.

Role Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Mechanical Engineer to join our design team, focusing on the development of the fuel handling system for the Aalo-1 reactor. As Mechanical Engineer at Aalo Atomics, you will be a key contributor to the design and development of the fuel handling system for the Aalo-1 reactor. This system is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient handling of nuclear fuel throughout its lifecycle within the reactor. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and scientists to develop innovative solutions that meet stringent safety and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and Development: Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of mechanical systems and components related to the fuel handling system, including large structures, mechanisms, containment structures, fuel-handling equipment, and transportation casks.
  • Core Operations: Develop and refine processes for core operations, including inserting, removing, and repositioning fuel assemblies within the reactor core, while ensuring the integrity of the reactor’s inert environment.
  • Hands-On Involvement: Be actively involved in the fabrication process of your designs, ensuring that they meet quality standards and are implemented effectively. You should enjoy getting away from the desk to oversee installation and implementation, ensuring your designs work flawlessly in the real world.
  • Mechanical Expertise: Bring a deep understanding of nuts and bolts mechanics to your work, ensuring that designs are practical, robust, and reliable.
  • Temperature Management: Ensure that removed fuel is managed within allowable temperature limits, particularly in the context of transitioning fuel to dry cask storage.
  • Equipment Integration: Oversee the integration and testing of key fuel handling components such as refueling stands, shielded canisters, gantry cranes, and grapples.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including those focused on the spent fuel storage and transfer processes, to address challenges related to fuel handling and material transfer.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all designs and processes comply with relevant safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably within the nuclear or energy sectors, with significant experience in designing large structures and mechanisms.
  • Design Passion: A deep love for creation, with a demonstrated ability to bring complex mechanical systems from concept to reality.
  • Hands-On Approach: A proactive, hands-on approach to engineering, with a willingness to engage in the physical aspects of installation and implementation.
  • Challenge-Driven: Motivated by challenges and driven to find innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Pride in Craftsmanship: A strong sense of pride in your work, with a commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable systems.
  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software and other engineering design tools, with a strong understanding of fabrication processes.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with temperature management and dry cask storage regulations is a plus.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
