Transportation Maintenance Specialist 2 – Highway Maintenance Specialist (Limited Duration)

The role:

This is a limited duration appointment that is expected to end on or before October 31, 2025. Limited duration appointments are benefits eligible and have a designated maximum length of service. This position has the potential to become permanent.

Note: This position will be based in La Grande and is on a crew that travels across the region. The successful candidate will have the ability to report to the La Grande maintenance station year round and use an ODOT vehicle to travel to the Baker City or Meacham maintenance stations during the winter depending on work needs.

A day in the life:

  • Apply, maintain and/or replace roadway/highway striping and/or legends.

  • Remove existing paint, epoxy, thermoplastics, 3-M tapes, and Dura Stripe using sand blasting or grinding equipment.

  • Perform surface repair including hand, pothole and concrete patching and small inlay work.

  • Operate heavy trucks, rollers, blades and motor graders to patch large sections of highway, remove slides and build or repair roadway shoulders and bike paths.

  • Perform snow removal and clean-up, sanding, snow plowing.

  • Patrol and monitor assigned roadway/highway sections for hazardous driving conditions including frost, ice, snow, rockslides, sinkholes and other traffic impediments.

  • Pick up and dispose of debris, dead animals and litter found on the roadway and adjacent right-or-way.

  • Respond to weather-related emergencies by assessing the need for and performing snow removal, de-icing or sanding to keep roadways, highways and bridges open for the traveling public.

  • Patrol and monitor assigned roadway/highway sections for hazardous driving conditions including frost, ice, snow, rockslides, sinkholes and other traffic impediments.

  • Must be able to move around rough terrain, on uneven slopes and may need to lift up to 60 pounds.

  • May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes with travel and short term overnight stays required.

Minimum qualifications:

One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work;

OR

Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.

Special qualifications:

  • Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.

  • This position requires a maximum 30 minute response time to 3014 Island Ave, La Grande, OR 97850 for emergency call-outs.

  • A current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL-A) is preferred.

  • Right of way, highway maintenance or construction experience.

  • Winter maintenance experience such as sanding, deicing or using snow blowers or snowplows.

  • Roadway striping operations experience.

  • Experience using hand tools and operating light and heavy equipment such as tractors, excavators, loaders or dump trucks.

  • Experience working in conditions that may be hazardous.

  • Experience working on a team.
