About the Role:

Are you looking to utilize your expertise to contribute positively? Join our dedicated team and assist in ensuring the safety of Oregon's roadways and its travelers. In this position, you will operate machinery essential for the upkeep and restoration of roads, highways, bridges, and related structures. Additionally, you will participate in emergency response and traffic management following incidents, adverse weather, spills, and other unforeseen events.

This is a temporary role with a defined duration. Temporary positions are eligible for benefits and have a specified maximum length of service. There is potential for this role to transition into a permanent position.

Note: This role will be based in a central location and involves travel across the region. The successful candidate will be expected to report to the designated maintenance station year-round and utilize a state vehicle for travel as required.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Apply, maintain, and/or replace roadway and highway markings and legends.
  • Remove existing materials such as paint, epoxy, and thermoplastics using appropriate equipment.
  • Conduct surface repairs including hand patching, pothole filling, and minor inlay work.
  • Operate heavy machinery including trucks, rollers, and graders for extensive highway repairs and maintenance.
  • Perform snow removal and related cleanup tasks, including sanding and plowing.
  • Monitor assigned roadways for hazardous conditions such as frost, ice, and other traffic impediments.
  • Collect and dispose of debris and litter found along roadways and adjacent areas.
  • Respond to weather-related emergencies by assessing and performing necessary actions to maintain roadway safety.
  • Must be capable of navigating rough terrain and lifting up to 60 pounds.
  • Availability for after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency response may be required, including travel and short-term overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience in basic roadway maintenance;

OR

Two years of experience in landscaping, maintenance, mechanical work, farming, logging, or construction.

Special Requirements:

  • A valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with necessary endorsements is required. Candidates must be able to obtain a commercial learner's permit within a specified timeframe and a full CDL-A within six months of hire.
  • This position requires a maximum response time to designated locations for emergency call-outs.
