Veterinary Research Tech

General Summary of Position
We are actively recruiting for an Animal / Vet Research Tech to join the team at MedStar Health Research Institute on the campus of MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. The Animal / Vet Research Tech will be expected to provide technical services in the preclinical research laboratory in a humane, safe and sanitary manner. Ideal candidates will have prior training and experience working with animals in a research setting.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with maintenance of a health surveillance and preventative veterinary medicine program.Assist with training programs for animal husbandry staff, and research staff utilizing animals.Provide animal health care and husbandry in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory animals, vivarium standing operating procedures, and as directed by the Attending VeterinarianResponsible for collection, submission, analysis, preservation and disposal of biologic specimens, to include euthanasia and necropsy of experimental animals.Responsible for restraint and handling of laboratory animals (rodents, swine, rabbits); surgical preparation, induction and maintenance of anesthesia, including endotracheal intubation (rabbits, swine); operation of gas anesthesia machines and physiological monitoring equipment;

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required

Experience

  • Experience working in a GLP environment and performing minor surgical procedures preferred
  • 1-2 years experience in a related field required
  • Phlebotomy experience in rabbits and experience with large animals (swine and/or rabbits) required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or certification by AALAS at the LATg level preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of FDA-GLPS's.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations regarding the proper standards of animal care and use in a research environment required.
  • Proficient in the use of basic computer software programs.

This position has a hiring range of $22.04 -
$36.41
