Position Overview

Salary: up to $150,000

The AFL-CIO Technology Institute, a non-profit organization established to advocate for the interests of workers in the evolving tech landscape, is looking for a Senior Policy Advisor specializing in artificial intelligence and its impact on labor, workplaces, and democratic processes. This role is crucial in guiding the Institute's strategic direction regarding technology policies that prioritize the needs of workers.

The Senior Policy Advisor will collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Policy & Research Director to shape and implement a comprehensive policy agenda. Key focus areas include algorithmic management, worker rights, equity across racial and gender lines, and surveillance issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote the AFL-CIO Technology Institute's policy initiatives related to artificial intelligence, ensuring frameworks are in place to protect worker rights in AI applications, procurement policies, and civil rights.
  • Conduct thorough policy analysis, develop high-level documents, and create reports and policy papers that address critical issues surrounding technology and labor.
  • Prepare materials that communicate public policy positions effectively to the labor community and other stakeholders, supporting the Institute's outreach and communication efforts.
  • Engage with federal and state policymakers to provide insights and recommendations on technology-related issues.
  • Simplify complex technological concepts into actionable insights for unions and labor organizations.
  • Coordinate with labor movement partners and facilitate discussions on AI policy and strategy.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with external organizations that share similar objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a related field, with demonstrated involvement in worker organizations.
  • Preferred: Graduate degree or relevant experience in a pertinent discipline.
  • Proven track record in the labor movement, civil rights advocacy, or consumer protection organizations.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in policy and advocacy, particularly in AI and workplace technology.
  • Experience in congressional or agency settings is a plus.
  • Exceptional communication and writing skills, with the ability to produce policy documents and engage diverse audiences.
  • Proficient in utilizing online tools and platforms for professional purposes.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to the principles of social and economic justice, as well as racial equity.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends when required.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary for this position is competitive, with a range up to $150,000, determined by the candidate's skills and experience.
