General Summary of Position
Provides primary ophthalmic care to patients under moderate supervision. Performs complete ophthalmic history and preliminary examinations, subspecialty tests, and contact lens work. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, policies, procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.Audits clinical supply levels, communicating to Physician which items falls below par level.Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advise as to who will see them next and make the patient comfortable during wait. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required. Communicates with reception and lead ophthalmic technician to facilitate proper patient flow.Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications. Participates in meetings and on committees and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Activity, Manual Lenometry, Confrontational Visual Fields, Stereo Testing, Evaluation of Motility, Pupillary Function Tests, Color Plates, Application Tonometry, Advanced Refractometry, Retinoscopy, Angle Assessment, Dilation of Pupils, Contact Lens Evaluations, Visual Field Testing, Optic Nerve Scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT, GDx), Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, A Scan and B Scan, Ophthalmic Imaging including Flourescein AngiographyProvides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills and patient care questions.Troubleshoot instruments as necessary, replacing bulbs, checking connections, performing archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations, and reporting continued difficulty to Pcian.Covers front desk responsibilities as needed. Duties may include answering phones, scheduling and cancelling appointments, pre-registering and registering patients in Cerner, and preparing patient charts.Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent required and
  • Associate's degree in related field preferred

Experience

  • 1-2 years 2 years experience as an ophthalmic technician or ophthalmic assistant. required

Licenses and Certifications

  • COT - Certified Ophthalmic Medical Tech COT (Certified Ophthalmic Technician) within 180 Days required or
  • COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within 180 Days required and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

  • Technical skills associated with assuring the appropriate performance of all emergency equipment utilized.
  • Ability to recognize and remain calm during emergency situations.
  • Ability to obtain, analyzed and prepare data from various patients.
  • Ability to anticipate physician/patient needs.
  • Analytical ability to identify and resolve clinical problems.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly through verbal and written communications.
  • Mathematical ability to perform required calculations.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
