The salary for this position is $19.50 per hour and is non-negotiable.

Mimetic Operators Library Extended (MOLE) is an open-source library that facilitates the usage of mimetic difference operators for the development of computational applications in science and engineering. Implementations have been developed in MATLAB and C/C++. The GitHub repository URL for MOLE is

MOLE is developed and maintained by researchers and graduate students affiliated with the SDSU Computational Science Research Center (CSRC). The Student Research Assistant will contribute to many aspects of the transition of MOLE from an open-source project into a broader adopted open-source ecosystem, focusing on building software documentation infrastructure, writing how-to guides and missing documentation, and contributing to writing new examples for the library. The Student will develop documentation pipelines, exploring different strategies to first convert existing LaTeX documents into markup language documents that can then be used to build HTML-based documentation using tools for rich formatting and cross-referencing, such as Sphinx.



Responsibilities

The Graduate Research Assistant will:

  • Work in a collaborative open-source community environment.
  • Automatically build and integrate MOLE code and documentation changes within a GitHub repository.
  • Implement documentation-building scripts for deployment of the MOLE documentation.
  • Link a published HTML-based user manual with automatic build status display in the MOLE GitHub repository.
  • Write How-to-guides and tutorials.
  • Maintaining professional routine communication with the CSRC supervisor and affiliated researchers who provide assignments to ensure coordination and implementation of assigned activities are on target and within established deadlines.
  • Learning new software development and documentation frameworks, such as Sphinx and GitHub Actions.
  • Ensuring compliance with SDSURF policies and procedures across all functions listed above.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply elementary research methods and procedures.
  • Ability to use Overleaf, Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, Google Suite, etc., to create reports and documents; maintain project tracking logs; and create memos, communications, and shared documents.
  • Ability to maintain professional and effective working relationships with others within the project environment (e.g., coworkers, management, administrative team, and participants), displaying strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to display motivation and initiative.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and cultural sensitivity when interacting with colleagues, organizational partners, and advisory committee members from a variety of socioeconomic and culturally diverse backgrounds.

MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Equivalent of completion of a bachelor's degree and registration in a SDSU Graduate degree program.
  • The candidate must be a graduate student at SDSU currently enrolled in a master's degree program.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of sufficient graduate-level STEM coursework to successfully perform the required duties of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS

  • A graduate student actively enrolled in a master's degree program in Computer/Computational Science, Applied Math, Engineering, or related computational and applied fields.
  • Experience with Overleaf/LaTeX.
  • Familiarity with some open-source community projects and their workflow.
  • Familiarity with version control, such as 'git'.
  • Familiarity with some best practices for open-source community projects.

ADDITIONAL APPLICANT INFORMATION:

  • Candidate must reside in California or live in a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results (including a criminal record check).
  • This is a 20-hour per week position during the nine-month academic period, and 40-hour per week during the three summer months.
  • This position will be based at the CSRC offices at San Diego State University in the Geology, Mathematics, and Computer Science Building (GMCS) building.
