Managing Editor, Americas Tanker Markets

This position is responsible for the leadership and day-to-day management of a team of market reporters based across Houston and Mexico City. The team is an essential part of Platts' global shipping editorial coverage group, producing freight rate assessments for tanker market routes within the Americas, and between the Americas and the rest of the world. The team is also charged with producing market-leading commentaries, breaking news coverage and in-depth analysis of the tanker freight markets. The shipping group is often at the forefront of initiatives within Platts as a whole. As well as managing the Americas and Mexico teams, the person who takes on this role will take the lead in our market engagement efforts and methodology development work.

Responsibilities and Impact:

  • Develop and lead a team of seven editors across Houston and Mexico City covering freight, including all aspects of recruitment, goal-setting, performance reviews and talent development.
  • Manage daily issues as they emerge in the Americas tanker freight markets. Co-ordinate approach with the Global Director of Freight Pricing, regional leaders for oil and commodity market coverage, and Price Group when appropriate.
  • Take on personal coverage of the tanker freight markets as needed. Ensure that emerging market issues which may require further investigation and potential methodology adjustment are highlighted and acted upon in an appropriate time frame.
  • Act as the critical "second pair of eyes" function to ensure process is being followed correctly during the assessment process.
  • Drive news and analytical coverage throughout the team, show strong personal leadership in coverage of the markets.
  • The Americas shipping team is well established and this role involves strengthening and extending Platts Americas freight coverage, including launching new tanker assessments, as well as expanding into new freight markets and helping to lead the Tanker Base Rates project. Support strategic development of freight coverage, within the region and as a leader within the global shipping team. Help lead discussions around current and future content, support product development discussions from an editorial point of view.
  • Engage closely with stakeholders across the market place, meeting with a variety of sources and sharing feedback with internal stakeholders as appropriate, using meeting notes and other means to share information gathered. Drive engagement philosophy across the team and expand the source list.

Compensation/Benefits Information: (This section is only applicable to US candidates)

S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $72,300 to $143,800. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual's geographic location, as well as experience level, skill set, training, licenses and certifications.

In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. This role is not eligible for additional compensation such as an annual incentive bonus or sales commission plan.

What We're Looking For:

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • Degree educated with at least three years' experience of reporting/ analytics or editorial management experience.
  • Working to intra-day deadlines in high pressure environments. Our processes are daily and we have frequent intraday deadlines. Efficient running of the team will only be possible if the person filling this position is a master of time management.
  • Strong at identifying improvements and efficiencies and implementing processes that continually promote productivity and quality improvements.
  • Strong leadership ability which utilizes influence, and promotes team collaboration and development, as well as personal accountability.
  • Accuracy under time pressure. It is critical that we deliver accurate assessments to the market consistently.
  • Detailed knowledge of how Platts assesses and covers shipping markets. This is to ensure that Platts processes are applied consistently and accurately.
  • Proven public speaking abilities. This position will be an internal and external ambassador of what we do and must be an accomplished and confident speaker.
  • Proven internal and external training capabilities. This position will be responsible for ensuring a consistent approach to methodology and training, in cooperation with the shipping management will be a big part of this.
  • Proven real-time news abilities. This position will be writing news and analysis on a real time basis but will also be responsible for driving news in the team.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of freight trading and chartering would be an advantage.
  • Experience in price reporting and assessing commodities.
  • An understanding of additional languages.
  • Higher degree education, such as a Master's degree or PhD.
  • Broadcasting/Presenting skills.
  • Knowledge of Americas and global trade markets. A detailed knowledge of markets is required to be able to direct coverage.
