SUMMARY

Function:

Utilizes technical knowledge, leadership abilities, analytical skills, and business acumen to oversee the comprehensive operations of the
Lozano laboratory.


Scope:
Influences all facets of managing the Lozano laboratory, including the animal colony and clinical partnerships across the institute.

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's or PhD and exceptional technical and experimental capabilities.

KEY FUNCTIONS

The successful candidate will oversee laboratory management and will be accountable for conducting experiments as necessary to support the publication of research findings.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Administers the animal facility for the Lozano lab and sustains a small group of mice for
a) experiments

b) assisting lab colleagues as required

c) fulfilling requests for our animals from other principal investigators (within and outside of MD Anderson)

  • Genotypes mice and employs them for experiments as necessary.
  • Initiates new experiments as projects develop and takes the lead in proposing experimental ideas. The following skills are essential:
a) DNA, RNA, and protein preparation

b) Real-time PCR

c) Western blot

d) IHC staining

e) Cell culture, including the creation of MEFs

  • Manages Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and animal protocols. Prepares for semi-annual IACUC inspections. Collaborates with Veterinary Medicine to arrange for animal imports and exports.
  • Familiar with eGlobal Shipping. Prepares all shipping packages for the laboratory.
  • Catalogs and organizes tissue samples in -80C freezers, and cell lines in liquid nitrogen tanks.
  • Places orders for laboratory reagents and supplies, research animals, and mouse room cage-cards.
  • Oversees inventory of supplies and equipment, tracking expenses.
  • Applies laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve operational challenges and collaborates with others to address issues.
  • Supports graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in their research projects.
  • Maintains all laboratory equipment.
  • Works with the laboratory safety officer to ensure adherence to state/federal and institutional regulations regarding the storage, use, and disposal of materials. Prepares for annual EH&S safety inspections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required:
Bachelor's degree.

Preferred:
Master's degree

EXPERIENCE

Required:
Seven years of experience in scientific, research, or clinical laboratory settings, including four years in a supervisory or managerial role. With a preferred degree, five years of required experience including four years in a supervisory or managerial role.

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Must successfully complete pre-employment skills assessments as mandated by Human Resources.
