Duties
As a Supervisory Computer Scientist (Data Scientist) you will:

Serve as a Branch Chief, with the full scope of supervisory, managerial, surveillance and data science oversight to staff in the branchDevelop and recommend policies for the execution of programs/systems, determine effectiveness of current programs/systems, and recommend or develop new or revised programs/systems as they relate to preventing or controlling disease, injury, and disabilitySupervise a staff of health scientists, epidemiologists, and other professional, technical and administrative staff, utilizing subordinate team leaders to plan, direct, coordinate, or oversee workProvide leadership to stimulate and encourage scientific, technical and administrative direction of outside professional societies and organizations to expand and diversify research programsWork closely with a cross-functional team to deliver information technology services and tools for environmental public health purposesLead the development of program policy and objectives, short and long-term goals, program strategies, and operating policiesProvide technical advice and assistance on public health information systems within and outside the organization and its constituents and serve as an agency expert in new and emerging information technology tools, platforms and methodsPrepare comprehensive reports that include discussion of substantive issues related to data science methodology for public health surveillance and related applications, assessment of the adequacy and quality of data used in the analyses, and explanation of the methods, results, and relevance to the health issue under studyProvide strategic planning, systems needs assessments, identifying and resolving gaps, describing data standards and data exchange needed across systems, and developing standards for system interoperabilityCollaborate with agency, interagency and multilateral organizations to develop standards, tools, and guidance to improve the secure collection and use of public health associated dataRequirements Conditions of EmploymentDue to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements below may differ:US Citizenship required.

Security clearance level may differ from the position announced when certificates are shared.
CDC participates in the USCIS Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify). E-Verify helps employers determine employment eligibility of new hires and the validity of their Social Security numbers.
Direct deposit is required.
One-year probationary period may be required.
This position may be subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Time in grade (TIG) must be met within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Candidates must have demonstrated or shown the potential to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A supervisory probationary period may be required.

If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result. Qualifications
All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
Basic

Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in computer science or Bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science.

At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
Minimum

Qualifications:

To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following

Experience: planning, managing, and evaluating the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of information systems for public health programs.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education

Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience.

An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements.
