About Black, Latinx, Asian Charter Collaborative:

Black, Latinx, Asian Charter Collaborative (BLACC) is a nonprofit collaborative representing some of the highest performing community-based charter schools in the state, founded and led by people of color. BLACC includes 24 schools representing approximately 14,000 students across New York State. BLACC member schools reflect the true ethos of what charter schools were meant to be — schools designed to innovate and iterate according to the needs of the students and families they serve.

Position Summary:

The Vice President (VP) of Membership and Programs plays a key role on the BLACC team. Working closely with the CEO, the VP leads member programs which support current charter school leaders of color as they create and sustain high quality charter schools.

The VP collaborates with the board of directors, member schools, grant selection committee, vendors, funders, and the greater community to ensure that member schools have the support needed to support and improve their schools. Current programs led by the VP include:

  • Monthly member meetings
  • Annual leadership retreat
  • Member school recruitment
  • The BLACC Fund
  • Teacher recruitment
  • Various member events

The VP, with the CEO, envisions The BLACC Fund parameters and funding programs to ensure regrant funds are used in the most purposeful and innovative ways — all toward promoting equity and success for our children.

Additionally, the VP works with the CEO to ensure our small team is cohesive and productive, and that we continue to create a learning organization where our teammates grow in their respective roles and careers.

Personal skills needed to be successful in this position include a strong sense of professionalism, leadership, innovation, and analytical thinking. You should be customer-oriented, results-focused, and have deep knowledge of the charter school sector in New York City and State.

To ensure success, the candidate should have a clear understanding of the organization's core values and culture. Top candidates will be exemplary leaders, have superb business acumen, and have a sound understanding of nonprofit and business strategies.

Job Responsibilities:

In partnership with the CEO, the VP of Membership and Programs makes certain the collective activities of our programs support BLACC's vision:

  • Acts as a strategic partner to the CEO and collaborates to ensure all are meeting performance expectations
  • Oversees the work of staff/vendors/consultants to support member relations and programming
  • Leads expansion activities (membership, organizational alliances, etc.)
  • Establishes and manages The BLACC Fund, our member regranting process, and its success metrics and opportunities
  • Leads development of innovative programming for member schools
  • Manages relationships with partners/vendors
  • Works with CEO to set comprehensive goals for performance and growth of membership and programming including the Parent Corps, advocacy, and public relations
  • In conjunction with the membership, determines collaborative professional development goals and creates relevant programs as needed
  • Ensures member satisfaction and value at each step along the membership continuum
  • Leads collection and analysis of annual member satisfaction survey
  • Creates and manages a streamlined member onboarding process
  • Leads collection and analysis of annual members' organizational data
  • Coordinates site visits between BLACC team and member schools
  • Collaborates with the Associate Vice President of Advocacy and Communications to prepare for monthly member meetings and newsletters
  • Works to ensure BLACC is up to date on the goings-on at member schools including contact information, departures, hiring needs, and other pertinent situations
  • Implements policies that promote organizational culture and vision
  • Fosters a professional, success-oriented, accountable environment within the organization
  • Works with CEO and team to establish the annual calendar of programs and events

Required Qualifications:

  • Ten years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree, or at least eight years of experience with an advanced degree (e.g. Master's/MBA/JD/MD)
  • Deep knowledge and experience with New York City and/or New York State charter school sector

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Twelve or more years of experience in successfully managing projects and/or programs
  • Experience working either independently or as part of a project management team, depending on the size and need of the initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead program work
  • Must be comfortable designing for the future, while managing day-to-day operations
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills which can be leveraged to consistently succeed
  • Understanding of continuous improvement concepts
  • Excellent influencing, facilitation, and partnering skills
  • Experience and ease interfacing with senior management and board members
  • Analytical, flexible, team-oriented, with good interpersonal, communication, and follow-up skills, and strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Technical proficiencies in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
