Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Peabody is reimagining the role of the Conservatory for 21st Century Artists, breaking ground in programs for new media, arts and health, and for its commitment to performing arts as a catalyst for sustainable communities.


The Director of Development at Peabody Institute is a new position and will be a critical leader on the Development and Alumni Relations team. This position will manage a team of 2-3 front-line fundraisers and development operations staff and will report directly to the Associate Dean for External Relations to build a robust personal solicitation program to meet the philanthropic goals to support our academic priorities set forth for our next comprehensive campaign. The Director will work collaboratively with other members of Johns Hopkins Development Alumni Relations (DAR) to leverage support for fundraising, student recruitment, and institutional advancement efforts. We are seeking a dynamic individual with a passion for music and dance, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to forge meaningful relationships with diverse stakeholders.


Key responsibilities:

  • Focus on commitments of $50,000+ and will raise $500,000 or more per year. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a major gift prospect pool of alumni, friends and other supporters for major and planned gifts. Maintain and actively manage a portfolio of about 75 prospects with the capacity to make major gifts.
  • Working closely with faculty, External Relations, and other colleagues, plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to major gifts; maintain regular contact with supporters in pursuing these strategies and build enduring relationships, completing 125-150 virtual and in-person visits per year.
  • With the Associate Dean for External Relations, staff Peabody leadership, and the Peabody Institute Advisory Board, support the preparation of presentation materials and meeting logistics, and development of onboarding and engagement activities for individual members.
  • Identify and evaluate the giving potential of high-end affiliated and unaffiliated annual and major gift prospects through personal visits and research; and manage the cultivation and solicitation of planned giving prospects.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean, develop and manage the annual development plan for the Peabody Institute including setting goals, developing work plans, monitoring efforts and evaluating results on a weekly and monthly basis; and liaising with key central development offices.
  • Manage staff of professional fundraisers and development operations staff and support direct reports in annual work plans and goal setting. Evaluate progress accordingly.
  • Participate in the department's campaign planning process and will write and manage the production of special fundraising publications such as campaign case statements, bespoke proposals, and brochures.
  • Engage with all constituent engagement activities of Peabody and coordinate, as appropriate, with the alumni relations program to develop and implement an outreach strategy to engage alumni and other constituents in supporting Peabody.
  • Working with Peabody DAR team, support the development and production of top-tier development events including annual leadership luncheon, donor receptions, and academic ceremonies (professorship dedications and commencement receptions) and alumni receptions.
  • With the Associate Dean, contribute to innovative team building and exceptional leadership to support a robust and highly productive team environment for Peabody External Relations.
  • Engage in extensive travel, as needed, to cultivate donors.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Seven years related professional experience, including at least 2 years of management experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience in crafting engaging content for various audiences.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational and project management abilities.
  • Proficiency in database management and familiarity with CRM software preferred.
  • Passion for music and the arts, with a deep understanding of the role of donor and alumni engagement in sustaining a vibrant artistic community.
