Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model whichincludes four different work modalities. This role has a hybridarrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The managerwill confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/allteam members will work in the office. Employees who travel onuniversity business can count those days towards their onsitedays.

The Director of Development at the Carey Business School is acritical leader on the Development and Alumni Relations team. Thisposition manages a team of 2-3 front-line fundraisers, reportsdirectly to the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relationsand focuses on meeting the philanthropic goals established tosupport Carey’s academic priorities. The Director workscollaboratively with other members of DAR to leverage support forfundraising, student recruitment, and institutional advancementefforts.

Key responsibilities:
  • Focusing on commitments of $50,000+ with an expectation ofraising $1,000,000 or more per year.
  • Overseeing the direct fundraising efforts of the school,including direct response appeals and portfolio-based giftofficers.
  • Managing a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and beingexpected to conduct a minimum of 75 cultivation and solicitationvisits a year, including the preparation of written proposals
  • Working collaboratively across Johns Hopkins University andalso being expected to build strong relationships across the CareyBusiness School’s departments and faculty leadership and to developa substantive understanding of the Carey Business School’s fundingneeds, as defined by the Dean and Management Council.
  • Identifying and evaluating the giving potential of high-endaffiliated and unaffiliated annual and major gift prospects throughpersonal visits and research; and managing the cultivation andsolicitation of planned giving prospects.
  • Working closely with the Associate Dean for Development andAlumni Relations to staff the School’s dean, as well as the Dean’sAdvisory Council and other boards.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean, the Director ofDevelopment will develop and manage the annual development plan forthe Carey Business School including setting goals, developing workplans, monitoring efforts and evaluating results.
  • Attending university-wide development meetings, andparticipating in task forces and committees including liaising withthe University’s foundation and corporate relations office
  • Participating in the department’s budget planning process andwriting and managing the production of special fundraisingpublications such as campaign case statements and brochures.
  • With the Associate Dean, contributing to innovative teambuilding and exceptional leadership to support a robust and highlyproductive team environment for Carey.
  • Donor travel.
  • Performing other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Seven years related professional experience


Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree
  • Seven years of development experience in higher education,including cultivation and solicitation of major gifts andsupervisory management experience.
  • Strong management knowledge and skills, and superb written andoral communications skills are essential.
  • Proven fundraising ability, knowledge of major prospectmanagement, planned giving instruments and the ability to exerciseindependent judgment.
