Position Focus:

The Economic Growth Center (EGC) is Yale’s hub for research and teaching on international development and trade. It aims to leverage economics research and data-driven insights for equitable development. 

EGC, based at the Yale Economics Department, is seeking a Senior Program Manager (SPM) to play a lead role in facilitating the development, strategic management and execution of research projects and initiatives led by faculty affiliates of EGC. The SPM will provide hands-on project management, financial and operational support, guidance and oversight for a set of activities based at Yale, but operating in close collaboration with other research institutions, in the and abroad.

The SPM will manage project portfolios, including resource allocation, stakeholder coordination, project planning and management, relationship management with partner institutions, and execution of policy-research events. This will include complex financial projections of large initiatives across multiple funding sources to make assessments and recommendations that feed directly into project decision-making.

The SPM will manage proposal applications for grants and gifts, including partnership development, formulating budget assumptions alongside faculty and research staff, preparing budgets in collaboration with finance staff, compiling proposal components, liaising with senior administrators to secure relevant approvals, and managing the engagement with subcontractors and counterparts for grant submissions; managing grants once awarded, including partnership management, tracking and preparing reports and deliverables, track and forecast budget spending, allocate expenses and financial planning, ensure compliance with grant requirements, and other project management. The SPM will also provide guidance, oversight and direct support for protocols for the responsible use of human subjects in research.

The SPM will also provide strategic direction on hiring (including international), vendor agreements, memorandums of understanding (MOUs), and operational aspects of portfolio; provide management oversight to project staff; oversee recruitment efforts for project staff and research fellows; and manage the design and delivery of policy research conferences and events. The SPM will refine, create and implement mechanisms for close collaboration with operational and administrative at other collaborating institutions including grant management systems, fundraising and managing project resources, recruiting team members and support for events or workshops, travel to the field as needed to ensure robust management of program activities and negotiate and problem solve with external vendors and collaborators.

The SPM will also support the expansion of partnerships between EGC, Inclusion Economics and other Yale research centers and potentially other collaborating institutions on topics related to high quality program and financial management. Essential Duties

1. Leads the identification and evaluation of potential funding sources, the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program. 2. Responsible for disseminating and publishing all program information. 3. Assists in developing and implementing strategic plans. 4. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifies outreach potential, and promotes philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. 5. Obtains grant funding through timely submission of well researched, well written and well-documented grant proposals. 6. Maintains and implements a calendar of potential funding activities 7. Utilizes appropriate University and sponsor electronic systems to effectively manage, submit and/or report sponsored projects activity. 8. Assists in guiding and directing policy, procedure, and training of sponsored project activities. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and six years of related and demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and related and demonstrated experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong skills in project management, including work plan and stakeholder management.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated experience in grant proposal preparation and grant management.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to adapt communication style to address the needs of individuals at all levels. Ability to negotiate skillfully with both internal and external constituents. Demonstrated ability to be able to present ideas and communicate effectively, both verbally and in written materials.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong and demonstrated ability to manage financial resources and construct and balance budgets for centers and projects across an array of revenues sources (, grants, gifts, endowments).

Required Skill/Ability 5:

The candidate should be well-organized, be able to prioritize, have strong attention to detail, and manage multiple assignments under simultaneously. There should be demonstrated ability to be able to drive forward project objectives according to set timelines and deliver on project aims.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Masters or higher degree in public policy, international development, international studies or related field plus five years’ progressive program management experience.
