POSITION SUMMARY:

The individual in this role is tasked with ensuring a secure, welcoming, and supportive environment for all residents. This includes overseeing guests and volunteers while ensuring adherence to shelter policies and procedures. Responsibilities encompass conducting intake for emergency guests, managing routine maintenance tasks, preparing healthy evening meals or delegating this task to volunteers, and supervising the entire process. Additionally, the role involves receiving and documenting donations made to the shelter. The Shelter Attendant collaborates with the Homeless Shelter team to effectively address the needs of guests and contribute to the community's efforts in preventing homelessness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide guidance and oversight to guests and volunteers, fostering a secure and positive environment.
  • Establish and uphold professional boundaries in interactions with guests, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Assess and respond to emergency situations with efficiency.
  • Prepare nutritious evening meals or delegate tasks to volunteers, ensuring food safety practices are followed and the kitchen is maintained post-meal.
  • Document all guest information and ensure that the Targeted Case Manager receives all pertinent details for case management services.
  • Accurately record shift notes and specific incidents to ensure continuity of care for guests.
  • Conduct shift transitions, including thorough walk-throughs and completion of overnight duties.
  • Supervise guests during designated breaks and ensure compliance with shelter smoking policies.
  • Ensure all guests are signed in and out appropriately, with valuables secured as per policy.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Ensure compliance with shelter policies among guests and volunteers.
  • Manage phone communications, taking messages or connecting callers to appropriate staff.
  • Assist guests with laundry services, including the distribution of supplies.
  • Prepare breakfast meals when necessary or assign tasks to volunteers, maintaining food safety standards.
  • Participate in food safety training and adhere to sanitation practices during meal preparation.
  • Conduct intake for emergency guests, documenting all required information.
  • Complete assigned maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Facilitate house meetings and coordinate schedules for kitchen help and guest duties.
  • Provide childcare assistance when necessary during daytime operations.
  • Act as a liaison with community service providers as required.
  • Document and acknowledge any donations received by the shelter.
  • Attend staff meetings and actively engage in discussions.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor with guests, coworkers, and community partners, demonstrating self-motivation and resourcefulness.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with relevant coursework preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals facing mental health and substance abuse challenges.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings and weekends.
