Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services is recognized as one of Maine's most progressive and inclusive emergency shelters. Our facility, accommodating 48 individuals, operates with a low-barrier approach, welcoming all, including those facing challenges such as addiction, mental health issues, or past incarceration. POSITION SUMMARY:

The individual in this role is tasked with ensuring a secure, welcoming, and supportive environment for all residents. This position involves overseeing guests and volunteers, while upholding the policies and procedures of the shelter. Responsibilities include conducting intake for emergency guests, managing routine maintenance tasks, preparing healthy evening meals, or delegating this task to volunteers and guests while supervising the process. Additionally, the Shelter Attendant is responsible for receiving and documenting donations made to the shelter. This role is integral to the shelter team, focusing on addressing the needs of guests and contributing to the broader community's efforts to prevent homelessness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and guide guests and volunteers, fostering a secure, welcoming, and positive environment.
  • Maintain professional boundaries in interactions with guests, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Assess and respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Prepare nutritious evening meals or delegate this responsibility to volunteers and guests, ensuring food safety practices are adhered to and the kitchen is cleaned post-meal.
  • Document all guest information and ensure that the Targeted Case Manager receives all relevant details for case management services.
  • Accurately document shift notes and specific incidents to ensure continuity of care for guests.
  • Conduct shift transitions, including walk-throughs and completing overnight duties as required.
  • Oversee guests during smoke breaks, ensuring compliance with shelter policies regarding smoking areas. Supervise the playground area when in use by children of guests.
  • Ensure all guests are signed in and out of the shelter punctually, securing all valuables, including medications, in accordance with policy.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Ensure adherence to shelter policies and procedures by all guests and volunteers.
  • Manage phone communications, taking messages or connecting callers to appropriate staff.
  • Assist guests with laundry needs, including the distribution of soap and laundering bedding for absent guests.
  • When necessary, prepare breakfast meals or assign this task to volunteers, ensuring food safety practices are followed.
  • Participate in Food Handling Safety training and maintain proper sanitation practices during meal preparations.
  • Conduct intake for emergency guests, documenting all required information.
  • Complete assigned shelter maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Facilitate house meetings and manage schedules for kitchen help, guest duties, and laundry services.
  • Assist with childcare as necessary when parents are attending classes at the shelter.
  • Act as a liaison with community service providers as needed.
  • Receive and document donations made to the shelter.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute actively.
  • Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor with guests, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are essential:

  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma and relevant coursework; supervisory or leadership experience is advantageous.
  • EXPERIENCE: Experience working with individuals facing mental health and substance abuse challenges, along with a basic understanding of homelessness and its underlying causes.
  • SKILLS: Strong administrative, organizational, and planning skills; ability to interpret rules and procedures; excellent communication skills; strong interpersonal abilities; capacity to maintain confidentiality; and the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
