POSITION SUMMARY:

The individual in this role is tasked with ensuring a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all guests. This position involves overseeing guests and volunteers, ensuring adherence to shelter policies and procedures, conducting intake for emergency guests, managing routine maintenance tasks, and preparing or overseeing the preparation of nutritious evening meals. Additionally, the Shelter Attendant is responsible for documenting donations received by the shelter and collaborating with the Homeless Shelter team to effectively address the needs of our guests while contributing to the broader community effort to prevent homelessness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide guidance and oversight to guests and volunteers, fostering a safe and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while interacting with guests, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Assess and respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of nutritious evening meals, ensuring food safety practices are followed.
  • Document guest information and ensure the Targeted Case Manager has all necessary details for case management services.
  • Accurately document shift notes and incidents to ensure continuity of care for guests.
  • Complete shift transitions, including thorough walk-throughs and sign-offs on duty checklists.
  • Supervise guests during designated smoke breaks and ensure compliance with shelter policies.
  • Ensure all guests are signed in and out appropriately, securing valuables as per policy.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Ensure compliance with shelter policies and procedures among guests and volunteers.
  • Manage phone communications, taking messages or directing calls as necessary.
  • Assist guests with laundry services and manage bedding for absent guests.
  • Prepare breakfast meals when necessary, ensuring adherence to food safety standards.
  • Participate in food safety training and uphold sanitation practices during meal preparation.
  • Conduct intake for emergency guests, documenting all required information.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Facilitate house meetings and manage schedules for kitchen help and guest duties.
  • Provide childcare assistance as needed during Day Shelter hours.
  • Act as a liaison with community service providers as required.
  • Document and acknowledge donations received by the shelter.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute actively to discussions.
  • Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor with guests, coworkers, and community members.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are essential:

  • Education: High School Diploma and relevant coursework; supervisory or leadership experience is advantageous.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with individuals facing mental health and substance abuse challenges, along with a foundational understanding of homelessness and its underlying causes.
  • Skills: Strong administrative, organizational, and planning abilities; proficiency in computer skills and effective communication; capacity to maintain confidentiality and manage multiple tasks independently; willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
