Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Public Safety Telecommunicator to join our team at the City of Des Moines. As a Telecommunicator, you will be responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency service calls on an assigned shift.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive and process emergency and non-emergency service calls via 911 and other telephone lines
  • Determine the nature of the complaint and input information into the computer-aided dispatch system (CADS)
  • Route non-service calls or calls for other agencies to proper local, state, and federal agencies
  • Dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services units in a manner consistent with departmental policies and procedures
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • Some college or prior experience as a 911 or similar type position preferred
  • Must successfully complete the Basic 40 Hour Telecommunicator Training required by the State of Iowa within the first year of employment
  • Must obtain NCIC and Emergency Medical Dispatch certifications during first year of employment and maintain throughout employment as a Senior Public Safety Dispatcher
  • CPR and AED training and CPR certification within the first year of employment
Working Conditions

This is a regular less than half-time position, with available hours varying throughout the 24/7 period. The ideal candidate will work at least 12 hours per month.
