Position Overview - VICE PRESIDENT OF LEGAL AFFAIRS
Job Summary
The Vice President of Legal Affairs will offer legal guidance and support to the Board and Leadership at Cook County Health (CCH) regarding issues related to litigation, regulatory compliance, and governmental relations. This role is pivotal in shaping business strategies and overseeing corporate governance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategic direction for all legal matters within CCH.
- Oversee the provision of legal services to meet corporate objectives and priorities.
- Advise the Board and Leadership on various legal issues, including those arising from healthcare reforms.
- Review and respond to correspondence related to diverse legal matters.
- Develop and propose strategic business solutions.
- Collaborate with internal audit and compliance offices.
- Maintain effective relationships with local, state, and federal governmental bodies.
- Manage a team of legal professionals and support staff.
- Guide departments in revising ordinances, legislative proposals, and policies for intergovernmental relations.
- Conduct training sessions on legal matters for Board members and staff.
- Supervise the Freedom of Information Officer.
- Perform additional duties as required to support CCH.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer of CCH and the Chairman of the CCH Board of Directors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited institution.
- Active State of Illinois Law License in good standing.
- At least ten (10) years of legal experience, with a minimum of five (5) years in the healthcare sector.
- Three (3) years of leadership experience in a law firm, as In-House Counsel, or within a healthcare system.
- Proficient in negotiating and drafting various legal agreements and coordinating litigation efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a unionized healthcare environment.
- LLM or higher in healthcare law.
- Familiarity with managed care organizations and relevant regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expertise in labor relations, contracts, corporate compliance, and healthcare reform.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong program development, management, and leadership capabilities.
- Analytical and organizational skills with a focus on problem-solving and conflict resolution.
- Ability to articulate complex legal issues clearly.
- Competence in managing resources effectively to achieve organizational goals.
