Job Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Communications Manager who will report directly to the Head of the Department of Engineering Education and the Director of Communications and Marketing. This role is pivotal in orchestrating and assessing a range of communication strategies, projects, and platforms that align with the overarching advancement objectives of the department and the institution.

The Communications Manager will collaborate with supervisors to formulate an annual operational plan, which will be the basis for performance evaluation. The Department of Engineering Education is renowned for its PhD program and a robust first-year curriculum, supported by a dedicated team of faculty and staff. The department is committed to excellence in engineering education and research, engaging in various interdisciplinary programs.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Producing and editing newsletters and articles that showcase departmental research and initiatives.
  • Participating in recruitment efforts for graduate students and faculty.
  • Developing and implementing the department's social media and website strategies.
  • Overseeing various digital and print communication formats, including photography and videography.
  • Engaging in departmental and college events and activities.

The Communications Manager's efforts must be strategically aligned with the goals of the department, college, and university, adhering to established brand guidelines and accessibility standards.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong written communication skills, including proficiency in editing and copywriting.
  • Experience in interviewing and gathering information from subject matter experts.
  • Proficiency in using communication platforms in a professional context.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A Master's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, creativity, and self-motivation.
  • Familiarity with digital content management and social media strategies.
  • Experience in creating promotional materials and visual communication.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed.

Additional Information

The position offers a hybrid work schedule, requiring 1-2 days in the office, with flexibility for special events. Candidates must provide a portfolio or examples of graphic design work and writing samples with their application.
