Ortho-Surgical Charge Nurse

Job Overview:


In collaboration with the department manager, the RN - Coordinator I delivers leadership and clinical proficiency during their designated shift and within the department.

They are responsible for the management of unit resources to ensure that staffing aligns with patient census and acuity, maintaining both clinical and financial appropriateness.

As a clinical resource for staff, they exemplify professionalism and competency.

Position Scope:

Night Shift

Oversees and/or delivers direct patient care.

Provides assistance and guidance to staff in addressing and resolving issues related to patient and family concerns, physician inquiries, risk management, associate safety, and overall hospital safety.

Responds to patient emergencies as necessary and acts as the lead during disaster situations.

Works in conjunction with the staffing office to adjust staffing levels in response to changes in patient census throughout the shift.


Engages in communication with the incoming Charge Nurse regarding census, staffing, pending admissions and discharges, and any relevant patient information that may assist in assignment decisions.

Supports the unit management team in overseeing department productivity, staffing, timekeeping, and coordination of unit activities.

Conducts evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions as required.

Participates in hospital committees as a unit representative when necessary.

Upholds the mission, vision, and values of Lutheran Medical Center, adhering to service behavior standards.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

May be required to assist in other departments (within the scope of competency and qualifications) based on operational needs.

May be placed on-call during scheduled shifts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing is essential.


A Registered Nurse with an ASN/ADN degree must complete a BSN degree within four (4) years from the date of hire unless they possess a minimum of fifteen (15) years of continuous Registered Nurse experience in an acute care environment.

Failure to obtain a BSN within this timeframe may lead to suspension or termination of employment.

Any Registered Nurse who takes legally protected leave during the four (4) year completion period may have the period extended by a comparable amount of time.

Registered Nurses employed by specific facilities prior to designated dates with only an ASN/ADN will be exempt from this requirement. Certification:

Required:
A current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice is mandatory.


Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval.

(ACLS/NRP/PALS as applicable for unit or service.)

Preferred:
A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is favored.

Certification relevant to the unit or service is preferred.

  • Regular attendance to perform work on-site during scheduled business hours or shifts is necessary.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends is required for specific positions.

Physical Requirements:


Ongoing need for the employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors require the employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers is necessary to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.


This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc. Expected to lift and utilize a full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, typically including items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, which may include heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.). May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
