Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States City of Cambridge Full time

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Community Development Department (CDD) serves as the planning authority for the City of Cambridge. CDD is dedicated to nurturing a livable, sustainable, just, and equitable community. It collaborates with community partners, government entities, businesses, and residents to enhance the desirability of Cambridge as a place to live, work, learn, play, and innovate. The Environment/Sustainability team primarily leads the City’s initiatives to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions and to foster climate resilience.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Cambridge's Net Zero Action Plan outlines the City’s climate strategy for buildings, establishing policies and programs aimed at achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Achieving this ambitious target necessitates the decarbonization of buildings through electrification, enhanced efficiency, and increased access to renewable energy sources. Recently, Cambridge enacted one of the most rigorous building performance standards in the nation, mandating that the largest nonresidential buildings attain net zero by 2035. The City is actively working to implement these standards and assist building owners in their decarbonization efforts. Key initiatives also include promoting residential electrification at scale, expanding access to renewable electricity, and testing innovative retrofit financing models. The Building Decarbonization Intern will play a vital role in supporting the execution of these initiatives and will contribute to the exploration of new strategies for building decarbonization in Cambridge.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting in the execution of the large building performance standards, known as the BEUDO (Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance) amendments. This includes engaging with building owners, conducting data benchmarking and analysis, addressing policy inquiries, and collaborating on implementation strategies.
  • Developing informative content and documentation on building decarbonization for residents, businesses, and project stakeholders. This may encompass case studies, outreach materials, and presentations.
  • Evaluating information and program metrics to facilitate targeted outreach and assess outcomes.
  • Supporting the Cambridge Climate Committee in their advisory role regarding the equitable implementation of the Net Zero Action Plan.
  • Investigating advancements in climate policy and programs, as well as emerging decarbonization solutions to inform Cambridge's strategic approach.
  • Assisting with additional energy and climate-related tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Pursuing a master's degree in a relevant field or having completed a bachelor's degree, along with 1 to 3 years of pertinent work experience.
  • Familiarity with climate policy, clean energy, building energy concepts, and/or related energy strategies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A strong interest in climate policy and strategy, particularly in the areas of energy and buildings.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage tasks independently.
  • Exceptional writing skills and comfort in creating content for public dissemination.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and its application to inform strategic decisions.
  • Ability to adapt and excel in a fast-paced, independent, and dynamic work environment.
  • The City of Cambridge values diversity in its workforce, reflecting the community it serves. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to engage effectively with individuals and groups from various identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Standard office setting with fluorescent lighting and air conditioning. Moderate noise levels may be present. Engagement with partners may occur via virtual platforms.
