Role Summary

Groundwork Collaborative is seeking a Director of Communications to spearhead, design, and implement the organization’s comprehensive communications strategy. This role will oversee a dynamic team comprising a digital manager, press secretary, and external consultants. The Director will elevate the visibility and thought leadership of key progressive figures in economic discourse, including Groundwork's Executive Director and chief economist, as well as members of the Policy & Research teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and execute strategic communications plans for issue campaigns that align with our organizational vision.
  • Lead and nurture a high-performing communications team capable of agile and strategic responses.
  • Collaborate with senior management to craft and implement a cohesive communications strategy for Groundwork.
  • Utilize a variety of communication tools, including media outreach, digital engagement, and editorial content, to promote Groundwork's economic narrative.
  • Identify and develop materials to publicize organizational initiatives, campaigns, and collaborations.
  • Draft and refine reports, op-eds, press releases, statements, and other communication materials.
  • Foster productive relationships with journalists covering economic issues.
  • Assess and enhance existing communications infrastructure as needed.
  • Oversee the creation and dissemination of press, editorial, and digital content.
  • Manage communications-related programming and events.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven strategic thinker with extensive experience in communications planning and execution.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a commitment to high-quality standards.
  • Ability to integrate Groundwork's narrative change initiatives across diverse communication channels.
  • Strong interest in progressive economic messaging and fluency in economic policy, with the capacity to simplify complex concepts.
  • Experience in team management and a passion for mentoring emerging professionals.
  • Demonstrated success in leading communications for impactful issue campaigns.
  • Awareness of the news cycle and strategic insight into how to position Groundwork's economic perspective within it.
  • Proactive and resourceful in navigating a competitive media landscape.
  • Skilled in multitasking and thriving under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interest or experience in digital strategy.
  • Experience with major releases and securing exclusive media coverage.
  • Creative and innovative, open to exploring new solutions to established challenges.
  • Commitment to fostering a just and inclusive economy that provides opportunities and dignity for all, with a focus on dismantling systemic barriers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the progressive economic policymaking community.
  • Established relationships with reporters and media professionals, particularly those focused on economic and political issues.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $145,000 - $160,000, commensurate with experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including three weeks of vacation, health leave, two week-long office closures, additional time off for floating and federal holidays, zero-premium health insurance, a generous HRA, a retirement match of up to 6%, up to 16 weeks of parental leave, and reimbursements for health club and cell phone expenses, among other benefits.
