Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Public Works/City Engineer to join our team at the City of Reno. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and construction of capital projects, as well as managing the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and direct a comprehensive public works program, including maintenance and engineering functions.
  • Develop and administer departmental goals, objectives, and procedures.
  • Analyze and assess programs, policies, and operational needs, and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Identify and respond to sensitive community and organizational issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the work of lower-level staff.
  • Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Ensure project adherence to City policies and procedures.
  • Review and approve staff designs and construction drawings for projects.
  • Negotiate and administer various contracts and agreements.
  • Oversee a variety of maintenance and engineering functions.
  • Prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
  • Prepare and administer large and complex budgets.
  • Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Work in a team-based environment to achieve common goals.
  • Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil, environmental, or traffic engineering or a related field.
  • Ten years of increasingly responsible public works and engineering experience, including three years of management and administrative responsibility.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Possession of registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada.
