Position Title: Accountant

Salary: $83, $103,459.20 Annually

Classification Overview:

Under the guidance of management, the Accountant is responsible for executing a range of professional accounting tasks that include the preparation, maintenance, analysis, verification, and reconciliation of intricate financial transactions, statements, records, and reports. This role also involves coordinating and overseeing various accounting functions, assisting in the annual audit process, and providing essential support to management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct professional accounting tasks related to the coordination and supervision of accounting activities that support city-wide operations, ensuring the accuracy of general and specialized ledgers.
  2. Oversee the audit of payable vouchers and verify the accuracy of accounts payable, including proper coding and discounts.
  3. Manage the billing, recording, and monthly reconciliation of accounts receivable, addressing delinquent accounts as necessary.
  4. Assist in the posting, balancing, and reconciliation of the general ledger and subsidiary accounts, contributing to monthly and year-end financial closing processes.
  5. Review payroll adjustments, contracts, and other financial documents for accuracy and compliance.
  6. Prepare various financial, statistical, and special reports, including sections of the comprehensive annual financial report.
  7. Evaluate accounting and internal control procedures within city departments and recommend improvements.
  8. Prepare necessary documentation for review and adoption by the City Council and other agencies.
  9. Participate in the development and maintenance of specialized accounting information systems.
  10. Assist independent auditors as needed and record journal entries for various financial activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess a combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in governmental accounting.

Knowledge and Skills:

Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of public agency financial management principles, auditing standards, and accounting practices. They should also possess strong analytical skills, the ability to prepare accurate financial statements, and proficiency in using office equipment and accounting software.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, requiring the ability to perform tasks that involve sitting or standing for extended periods, operating office equipment, and communicating effectively with colleagues and the public.
