Job Overview:

The Surgical Services Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients across various surgical settings, including the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Same Day Surgery, Operating Rooms (ORs), Interventional Radiology, Labor and Delivery OR, and Endoscopy. This role is integral to a collaborative team effort aimed at adhering to established guidelines from the Surgical Care Improvement Project. The specialist will also oversee, evaluate, and compile the facility's medication utilization initiatives and contribute to the execution of cost management strategies.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Current licensure as a pharmacist in New Jersey
  • Certification as a licensed pharmacist immunizer in New Jersey
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or PharmD
  • Completion of a PGY1 residency program or equivalent professional experience
  • Board of Pharmacy Specialty Certification to be obtained within one year of employment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required within six months of employment

Preferred:

  • Completion of a PGY2 residency or equivalent experience is preferred

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Full-Time
  • Day shifts
  • Saturday coverage every six weeks

Key Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a primary resource for drug information for the healthcare team, tailored to specific patient demographics and available for consultations as needed
  • Promotes professional development through participation in educational opportunities, literature review, workshops, and in-service training
  • Facilitates communication between the Pharmacy Department and nursing and medical staff regarding medication therapy management, including prescription orders, discrepancies, and feedback
  • Serves as a mentor for pharmacy students and residents in the PGY1 and PGY2 programs
  • Monitors medication prescribing practices in line with established drug usage criteria prior to dispensing
  • Collaborates with the Director of Pharmacy and Assistant Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services to enhance clinical service offerings
  • Engages in departmental activities, committees, and projects as assigned
  • Provides input on clinical objectives, policies, procedures, order sets, guideline development, and financial planning
  • Supports departmental, facility, and pharmacy enterprise goals, as well as quality improvement initiatives
  • Documents and analyzes all clinical activities, interventions, medication errors, and adverse drug reactions according to departmental standards
  • Participates in the training and development of pharmacy staff, delivering at least one clinical presentation annually
  • Utilizes a medication screening process to ensure that medication orders are complete, appropriate, legally compliant, and prioritized
