Job Summary

The Virginia Department of Human Resource Management seeks a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Director of Exhibition and Curatorial Services. This role will lead the development and installation of exhibitions at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, drawing on the documentation, interpretation, and management of artifacts in the Foundation's collections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and champion the teams responsible for the development and installation of all permanent and special exhibitions at both museums.
  • Extend public engagement with 17th and 18th century American history and its legacies through audience-centered approaches.
  • Manage exhibition and curatorial staff, and oversee the overall administration of the Exhibition & Curatorial Services department.
  • Provide strong project management and inspirational leadership to ensure the team is collaborative, motivated, and mission-driven.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead creative and innovative exhibition development for a range of existing and expanding museum audiences.
  • Highly skilled at leading teams and delegating responsibility for the effective development and installation of exhibitions, care of collections, historical research, and public history interpretation.
  • Significant expertise in exhibition research, planning, and development.
  • Knowledge of artifact collections management, documentation, and artifact preservation.
  • Skilled at historic research, including primary and secondary source research and ability to distill historic research for audiences.
  • Expertise as a social, cultural, or public historian who uses objects to tell stories and make relevant connections with audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multifaceted projects and meet challenging timelines, including the ability to develop and administer a variety of complex budgets.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, visitors, and community partners.
  • Experience effectively leading, motivating, and developing staff and volunteers, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, for the purposes of public history and to build positive and successful working relationships, resolve conflict, and build consensus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and ability to work effectively and respectfully with people of diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of Foundation staff, as well as Board members.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postgraduate degree in American Studies, Archaeology, or History.
  • Progressively responsible management experience working in museum exhibition, curation, material culture, research, or related field.
  • Scholarly knowledge of 17th and 18th century American material culture, social, and political history.
