About the Department:

The Housing & Residence Life (HRL) division is a vital component of the University Life unit at the Commonwealth of Virginia. HRL employs a diverse team of over 170 full-time and graduate staff members alongside more than 200 undergraduate student staff members. This department oversees student housing facilities that accommodate approximately 6,000 residents across numerous residential complexes, including satellite campuses. HRL is dedicated to fostering a secure, inclusive environment that enhances the living experience for students, staff, and faculty alike.

About the Position:

The Community Director serves as a live-in professional staff member for a 12-month term, tasked with promoting the educational, social, and cultural development of individual students and the broader residential community. Key responsibilities include the initiation, execution, maintenance, and assessment of initiatives within designated residential areas that cultivate a student-centered environment supporting the academic objectives of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Supervision:

Oversee and mentor a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) and/or Community Assistants (CAs), providing ongoing training to enhance their leadership capabilities; Ensure compliance with University policies and HRL expectations among staff; Facilitate staff development programs to foster teamwork and problem-solving skills; Guide RAs and/or CAs in their administrative tasks, ensuring accuracy and timely completion; Offer constructive feedback on staff performance and conduct formal evaluations each semester; Lead regular team meetings with RAs and/or CAs; Conduct bi-weekly individual meetings with RAs and/or CAs; Promote awareness of campus and community issues through training and engagement; Support student staff in matters of diversity, inclusion, and social justice; Participate in the recruitment and selection of student staff candidates; Collaborate with academic and University Life partners to support Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) in the assigned area.

Student Support and Development:

Address inappropriate behavior in residence halls through educational approaches; Serve as a hearing officer to resolve student misconduct cases effectively; Assist students with academic and personal challenges, connecting them with campus resources; Manage psychological and safety-related incidents within the residential community, collaborating with campus resources; Participate in duty rotations to respond to emergencies and student crises; Engage in initiatives that promote student well-being and retention; Foster positive relationships with residents and staff to encourage open communication.

Community Development and Programming:

Implement a residential curriculum tailored to the developmental needs of student populations; Design initiatives that promote community values such as respect and inclusion; Coordinate participation in University-wide events and programs; Collaborate with faculty and stakeholders in community events and curriculum planning; Track community development efforts and assessment data as required.

Administrative Duties and Collaborations:

Attend staff development activities and departmental meetings; Conduct regular inspections of residence halls to identify maintenance issues; Maintain documentation related to facilities management and inventory; Ensure accurate record-keeping of student interactions and processes; Support fire drills and health inspections in collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety; Manage community agreements for residents; Uphold University policies and departmental goals; Serve on committees to support HRL or University Life initiatives; Maintain a visible presence in residence halls to promote community engagement; Build relationships with other University departments to enhance student support; Assist in the recruitment of HRL staff through participation in search committees; Support summer projects related to housing operations and training.

Other Duties:

Engage in assessment and reporting as necessary; Comply with all University policies and departmental regulations; Act as essential personnel during emergencies; Participate in hiring committees as available; Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience; Prior leadership experience in a residential or university context; Experience supervising undergraduate or graduate student staff; Strong problem-solving and communication skills; Effective leadership and organizational abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a live-in housing and residence life role; Proven relationship-building skills; Ability to work autonomously; Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects effectively.
