Overview


Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a mid-level Fire Protection Engineer to join the Worker Safety and Health (WS&H) group's Safety Engineering Team.

In this position, you will address the varied requirements of our research and operational partners by crafting and implementing fire safety and life protection strategies.

The collaborative nature of this role with scientific initiatives offers a chance for code compliance and risk assessment to further our scientific exploration goals.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and manage a comprehensive fire protection program across laboratory settings.
  • Implement fire safety and life protection code standards in a wide array of facilities.
  • Design and specify fire suppression and alarm systems.
  • Maintain technical documentation for facility chemical operating limits.
  • Provide fire protection guidance for research projects and initiatives.
  • Support fire safety for new construction and operational facilities.
  • Conduct fire and explosion risk analysis, assessment, and mitigation strategies.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience -OR- Master's degree or higher and 3 years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to assess, interpret, and apply fire protection codes and standards (including NFPA 13, 72, and 101).
  • Familiarity with DOE Fire Protection Standard DOE-STD-1066.
  • Experience in analyzing complex fire hazards and developing compliant technical solutions for safe operations.
  • Expertise in fire suppression and alarm system design; NICET II certification or equivalent.
  • Experience in designing facilities, systems, and equipment to meet fire safety and life protection standards.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Revit.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve objectives.
Working Environment

Work may occur in laboratory, facility maintenance, and construction settings.
