Position Overview


The Refrigeration Systems Technician is responsible for the effective operation and upkeep of a high-capacity refrigeration system, specifically a 1575 horsepower R-22 setup. This includes managing various components such as plate freezers, blast freezers, RSW chillers, cold storage units, galley coolers, and containerized cooler systems.

This role reports directly to the Refrigeration Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of the refrigeration system in collaboration with another technician.
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure a seamless flow of products throughout the facility.
  • Conduct pre-season and post-season maintenance to guarantee efficient start-ups.
  • Assist with additional projects as directed by the Chief Engineer.
  • Perform other assigned tasks as necessary.
  • Hold or be in the process of obtaining EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
  • Prior experience with large R-22 refrigeration systems is preferred, including familiarity with screw compressors, two-stage systems, and low-temperature liquid recirculation systems; training will be provided.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude, resourcefulness, and strong troubleshooting abilities.
  • Possess a working knowledge of electrical and piping systems.
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with Production, Quality Assurance, Safety, and other departments to meet overall plant goals.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Show willingness to support other plant projects as required.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential for this role.
  • Ability to work under pressure for extended hours, including weekends.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Adapt to living and working in confined spaces within a diverse cultural setting.
  • Maintain professionalism and uphold the highest standards representing Westward Seafoods.
  • Capable of performing essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to communicate verbally and audibly.
  • Frequently required to sit and manipulate tools or controls.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Specific vision capabilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be prepared to work in wet, cold conditions for 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week, in an environment with moving and loud machinery. Hearing protection and other safety equipment are mandatory.
