Position Overview:

The Surgical Physician Assistant plays a crucial role in delivering advanced medical care within a surgical environment, collaborating closely with surgeons in specialized surgical disciplines.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute complex, standardized patient care tasks that necessitate specialized training and experience, typically performed by a physician, without constituting the practice of medicine.
  • Evaluate patients' medical concerns and administer suitable treatments.
  • Carry out minor surgical procedures as directed by the supervising physician.
  • Manage pre-operative and post-operative care for patients in conjunction with the supervising physician.
  • Utilize advanced assessment techniques to foresee intricate patient issues related to surgery and effectively communicate findings to the supervising physician.
  • Assist in gathering patient medical histories.
  • Conduct physical examinations and provide episodic or problem-oriented care under physician supervision.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, including blood and urine analyses.
  • Monitor patient treatment plans and relay significant medical/surgical information to the attending physician.
  • Offer guidance and education to patients regarding preventive health measures and post-surgical care.
  • Support physicians in making therapeutic decisions.
  • Document patient charts for physician review and signature.
  • Prepare and maintain medical supplies and equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Licensure: Must possess a current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant.

Certification: Hold a current Physician Assistant certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.

Basic Life Support: Certification required, or as specified by the department.

Skills: Proficient in the operation of medical and surgical instruments and equipment necessary for the role.


Educational Background:

A Master's degree in Physician Assistant studies is required. A Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience may be considered based on the terminal degree requirements at graduation.


Experience:

No prior experience is necessary; however, experience in a surgical specialty is preferred.


Physical Demands:

Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
