The Surgical Services Nursing Assistant (SSNA) at Houston Methodist plays a crucial role in delivering patient care by utilizing fundamental skills and knowledge to effectively communicate and execute assigned nursing assistant tasks for a diverse patient demographic. This role is pivotal in preparing both the patient and the surgical environment prior to procedures, ensuring a smooth and safe experience.
Core Responsibilities
- Team Collaboration: Fosters a supportive atmosphere within the interprofessional care team. Engages in teamwork by proactively checking in with colleagues and responding positively to requests for assistance, thereby enhancing overall team performance.
- Effective Communication: Maintains respectful interactions with peers, staff, and physicians. Promotes open dialogue to facilitate understanding and clarity in patient care discussions, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of patient information.
- Patient Care Assistance: Provides essential support to Surgical Services patients, including the preparation of the surgical area and assisting with patient positioning and transport. Ensures a clean and organized environment through adherence to sterile techniques.
- Resource Management: Monitors and maintains adequate supplies such as surgical gowns and cleaning materials, ensuring operational efficiency within the department.
- Quality and Safety: Observes and reports patient conditions to licensed personnel, prioritizing patient privacy and safety. Actively participates in initiatives aimed at reducing hospital-acquired infections and improving overall care quality.
Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Previous healthcare experience preferred, such as in roles like Patient Care Assistant or Transporter.
- Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) certification required.
Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrates proficiency in essential job functions through ongoing assessments and evaluations.
- Exhibits strong communication skills, ensuring effective interactions with patients and healthcare team members.
- Possesses a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and maintaining a positive work environment.
