Position Overview:

This role supports the Regional Traffic Engineer in overseeing technical evaluations and offering guidance and training to Traffic Engineering Specialists (TES), primarily within the Central District. The incumbent will provide leadership, direction, and technical support to team members in their designated areas, while also assisting various districts. Responsibilities will vary, with a primary focus on Transportation Systems Maintenance and Operations (TSM&O) tasks, including plan assessments, traffic control, compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) regarding signage, road markings, and traffic signals, as well as reviewing private developer traffic impact analyses (TIA) and designs.

Modeling the values of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), this position emphasizes leadership, coaching, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Leaders are expected to be accountable, transparent, and communicative, promoting an inclusive, diverse, and safe workplace.

This position may allow for remote work within Arizona, contingent upon departmental needs and consistent performance metrics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate proposed projects for adherence to traffic standards and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct formal traffic impact analyses for private developments.
  • Perform field inspections on requests for signal, lighting, signage, and pavement markings to ensure compliance.
  • Review construction project documentation and Traffic Impact Analyses.
  • Participate in field reviews for proposed construction projects and attend relevant meetings.
  • Collaborate with Federal, local government officials, and private entities to address traffic-related concerns.
  • Prepare comprehensive traffic engineering studies and reports as necessary.
  • Supervise and mentor Traffic Engineering Specialists (TES), providing quality control and technical training.
  • Approve and assign work orders for maintenance teams in signage, striping, and traffic signal operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned relevant to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Fundamental principles of Civil and Traffic Engineering.
  • Applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Project development and construction processes.
  • Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and related safety and operational theories.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace.

Skills:

  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Interpersonal skills and team collaboration.
  • Providing clear direction and guidance.

Abilities:

  • Communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, with a preference for candidates possessing a minimum of three years of experience in Traffic Engineering.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This role necessitates driving as a core function. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and meet all training and record check requirements. Registration as a professional civil engineer in Arizona is required or eligibility for reciprocity within a specified timeframe.
