Department Overview

The Smart Transportation Systems (STS) Engineer is dedicated to the integration of innovative and emerging technologies within the transportation sector. In this capacity within the Traffic Technology Division, you will be tasked with the development, testing, and deployment of various STS and Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies, which encompass communication, detection, and signal management systems. Additionally, you will oversee related projects and provide support for the SmartDriveSM Program, the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Laboratory, and the ongoing enhancement and expansion of these initiatives in collaboration with regional partners.

Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Two years of professional civil engineering or hydrology experience
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) may substitute for the required experience
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in managing and programming STS devices through various applications and command-line interfaces and protocols
  • Experience with STS Operations, particularly in the deployment, operation, and maintenance of field equipment used by Traffic Management Center personnel
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams and coordinating with various stakeholders on local and regional implementation projects
  • Experience in project management and delivery of federally-funded grants related to STS and TSMO strategies, ensuring compliance with all Federal regulations
  • Ability to research new technologies and formulate testing, evaluation, and implementation strategies
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Strong writing and research skills to support grant development and proposal submissions
  • Ability to effectively present complex technical information to diverse audiences
Key Responsibilities
  • Management of the SmartDriveSM Program and TSMO Lab, including performance modeling and analysis
  • Project administration, management, troubleshooting, and delivery of New and Emerging Technology and Connected Vehicle-related initiatives
  • Research and test new technologies and explore partnership opportunities with vendors and local agencies through AZTech and other organizations
  • Design improvements to STS infrastructure utilizing new technology
  • Coordinate with other TSMO Divisions and MCDOT Departments on technology deployment and implementation opportunities
  • Represent MCDOT on technical committees related to STS
  • Pursue grant funding opportunities and develop proposals, including technical analysis
  • Other duties as assigned
Work Environment
  • May require exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, and involves walking or standing to a significant degree
  • Typically involves office or administrative work with minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions
  • May be exposed to extreme temperatures, humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise
  • May encounter moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, and travel
