POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Traffic Management Specialist is tasked with ensuring a secure and effective flow of vehicles in designated zones within the Recycle Yard, while safeguarding both employees and the public. The ideal candidate is dependable and dedicated to fostering a safe working atmosphere.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee safe and efficient traffic movement in the unloading area, assess incoming waste for hazardous and unauthorized materials, categorize waste by type, and ensure that drivers and pedestrians maintain a safe distance from heavy machinery and industrial activities.
  • Guide internal and external clients in a safe and efficient manner. Assist with and provide guidance to vehicles in reverse.
  • Communicate detailed load information to the team to facilitate effective customer placement.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Equipment Operators and fellow Traffic Management Specialists.
  • Ensure adequate space for neighboring vehicles to unload safely.
  • Monitor overhead clearances while trucks are unloading to prevent structural damage.
  • Keep the unloading area free of debris to prevent damage to equipment and property.
  • Strictly follow safety protocols.
  • Determine traffic patterns and vehicle positioning based on current conditions.
  • Assist with and provide guidance to reversing vehicles using approved hand signals.
  • Remain in position until relieved, and communicate any issues to the team lead.
  • Be aware of the location of coworkers and equipment, stay alert to changes, and maintain visibility to traffic.
  • Participate in daily safety briefings.
  • Position oneself to compensate for limited visibility, providing maximum advance warning and remaining clearly visible to traffic.
  • Maintain courteous yet authoritative communication with customers.
  • Establish eye contact with drivers requiring direction.
  • Ensure all work zones are clean, secure, and well-maintained.
  • Adhere to proper radio communication protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred but not mandatory.

  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients.

  • Maintain accuracy and composure under pressure.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

EDUCATION:

High school education or equivalent preferred but not mandatory.

SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

Attention to detail, Customer Service, Problem Solving, Safety Awareness.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Class C driver's license preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

A Traffic Management Specialist must possess the ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions in English. Additionally, the specialist must effectively communicate in English and present information in one-on-one and small group settings to customers, clients, and other employees. Spanish proficiency is preferred but not required.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to execute instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must possess the strength to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk over variable terrain for the duration of the work period.

  • Must be capable of performing repetitive tasks (twisting, turning, bending/stooping, reaching above and below shoulder level, gripping, and/or grasping) throughout the work period.
  • Must have specific vision capabilities (close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision).
  • Must have the ability to hear unaided.
  • Must safely manage traffic control in active work areas while utilizing a traffic-control wand and radio communication throughout the work period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily conducted indoors at a designated construction and demolition (C&D) facility. A Traffic Management Specialist is exposed to organic materials and general debris and regularly interacts with moving machinery, physical hazards from heavy equipment, potentially dangerous tools and equipment, traffic, fumes or airborne particles, and loud noises. The position may also involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Protective gear, including gloves, safety footwear, safety glasses, earplugs, and hard hats with flashing warning lights, is required.
