Position Overview:

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a crucial role in delivering patient-focused care by effectively executing specific components of the nursing process, taking into account the diverse needs of patients across various age groups, cultural backgrounds, and spiritual beliefs. The care provided aligns with the LPN's education and licensure and is conducted under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The LPN is expected to demonstrate competencies specific to their unit or area.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Execute designated nursing interventions as instructed by the Registered Nurse to achieve treatment objectives.

2. Gather essential clinical information from patients, their families, or significant others.

3. Utilize the interdisciplinary care plan as a framework for delivering care, including medication administration.

4. Perform all duties and responsibilities outlined in the Patient Care Technician (PCT) job description.

5. Examples of tasks that may be delegated by the Registered Nurse include:

6. Administer medications via oral, rectal, intramuscular, or subcutaneous routes.

7. Monitor and document the effects of medications, including patient reactions.

8. Conduct venipuncture, blood cultures, and bleeding time assessments.

9. Collect blood specimens through venipuncture and manage intermittent infusion devices (e.g., heplocks, saline locks).

10. Initiate, prime, disconnect IV lines, and regulate flow rates as needed.

11. Perform tracheal suctioning, nebulizer treatments, routine oxygen therapy, and pulse oximetry.

12. Flush intermittent infusion devices as part of blood drawing procedures.

13. Insert and remove indwelling urinary catheters and perform intermittent clean catheterizations.

14. Conduct neurovascular and neurologic assessments.

15. Respond promptly to patient requests and inquiries.

16. Introduce oneself and clarify the role in patient care.

17. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of policies and procedures, participating in unit initiatives to enhance quality care.

18. Answer phone calls as necessary.

19. Ensure a clean and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and colleagues.

20. Pursue ongoing educational opportunities to stay current in practice and foster personal growth.

21. Clean and maintain equipment and supplies according to established protocols, ensuring adequate inventory.

22. Complete additional tasks as assigned.

23. Foster positive relationships and collaborate effectively with team members, addressing conflicts constructively and contributing to problem-solving efforts.

24. Uphold the confidentiality of all information related to patients, physicians, colleagues, and visitors, discussing sensitive information only in appropriate settings.

25. Adhere to the Code of Conduct, Service Excellence Standards, and the Mission, Vision, and Values of Trinity Health.

26. Take responsibility for performing job duties safely, ensuring personal safety and that of colleagues, and reporting any hazards or unsafe practices to management immediately.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Engage in or support nursing or hospital research initiatives by assisting with data collection and encouraging patient participation.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent, along with one year of specialized nursing education.

Experience: Previous experience in a similar role is preferred.

Certification/Licensure: Must possess an active license to practice as an LPN.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to apply nursing techniques within defined responsibilities to meet patient and family needs.

2. Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act and the roles of LPNs in relation to RNs.

3. Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues.

4. Attention to detail and the ability to concentrate for extended periods.

5. Physical capability to walk and stand for significant portions of the workday.

6. Ability to lift, turn, and position patients as required.
