About the Department

The Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment (FASE) serves as a pivotal administrative unit within the Division of Enrollment. Our primary mission is to enhance opportunity and affordability by providing and coordinating financial resources that facilitate access in line with Cornell University's foundational principle of inclusivity in education.

FASE is committed to guiding students through the intricate landscape of financial aid and higher education funding. We collaborate closely with various university departments, including the Office of the University Registrar, Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of the Bursar, and numerous academic Schools and Colleges, to support Cornell's diverse student body and promote their success.

The Opportunity

The Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor to join its Need Analysis and Packaging team. In this role, Financial Aid Counselors provide essential support to Cornell's diverse student population and their families, offering specialized knowledge and guidance on financial aid application processes, aid offers, and college financing options. They possess a comprehensive understanding of core student service lifecycle concepts, including admissions, registration, and student accounts.

Key responsibilities of the Financial Aid Counselor include:
  • Assessing aid application materials, determining estimated cost of attendance budgets, conducting accurate need analysis calculations, making aid eligibility decisions, and packaging aid in accordance with relevant regulations and policies while managing a substantial caseload of student files.
  • Delivering clear, precise, and personalized assistance to help students and families navigate complex aid application processes, policies, and timelines.
  • Engaging regularly with students and their families through in-person and virtual appointments, email, and other electronic communication methods.
  • Providing timely support and proactive outreach to ensure outstanding student experiences.
  • Discussing tailored aid offers, eligibility criteria, terms and conditions, adjustments, unique circumstances, long-term financial success, student debt, and external resources like scholarships, while addressing any questions or concerns.
  • Maintaining current knowledge and skills, exercising sound professional judgment, and contributing to team-oriented objectives.
We are looking for a dynamic, collaborative professional who thrives in a team-oriented, remote-friendly environment and excels in a large, complex university setting. Attributes such as creative thinking, self-motivation, accuracy, organization, and attention to detail are essential for success in this role, along with the ability to work efficiently towards team goals and challenge the status quo when necessary.

What We Need

To be considered, applicants must submit both a resume and cover letter.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a student financial aid or scholarships role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with financial aid software systems, federal aid regulations, or institutional need analysis concepts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments proactively.
  • Proven ability to work independently and productively, think critically, exercise sound professional judgment, and efficiently meet established timelines.
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Experience working effectively with moderately complex systems and business processes.
  • A demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience in a customer service or similar professional environment, engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the CSS Profile Application and Institutional Methodology (IM) for need analysis.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, ImageNow, IDOC, or Workday.
  • Proficiency in English and a second language.
Rewards and Benefits
  • This position may offer the flexibility to work remotely from a location of the employee's choice within the United States, subject to university policies.
  • Cornell is recognized nationally for its commitment to health, wellbeing, sustainability, and diversity initiatives.
  • Our benefits package includes comprehensive healthcare options, generous retirement contributions, wellness programs, and employee discounts with various retailers.
  • Leave provisions encompass health and personal leave, three weeks of vacation, and 13 holidays.
  • Cornell provides impressive educational benefits, including tuition-free Extramural Study and Employee Degree Program, tuition assistance for external education, and support for children's tuition.
