About the Role

The Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking an exceptional leader to fill the position of Associate Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Belonging, and Engagement. This role will play a critical part in promoting an inclusive and equitable environment for all members of the VCU community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the university.
  • Collaborate with various departments and units to identify opportunities and solutions that align with the university's commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Lead and develop programs and initiatives to strengthen VCU's commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Inclusive Excellence to promote an equitable, welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members of the VCU community.
  • Develop and implement plans to increase students' engagement, sense of belonging, and inclusion.
  • Assess and implement institutional needs for learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to create sustainable individual and institutional change.
  • Supervise staff and oversee the development, implementation, and activities of Centers and Institutes.
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of an Inclusive Excellence Fellows Program for students.
  • Serve as the Division's point of contact with the VCU Health System's leadership to share resources and expertise, ensuring alignment as One VCU.
Requirements
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D., JD, Ed.D., or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment in higher education.
  • Five years or more of experience developing and leading inclusive and diverse initiatives and programs for students.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in higher education leadership roles.
  • Minimum of five years experience facilitating and leading change efforts toward equity, inclusion, or diversity or campus climate and culture.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate persuasively and effectively to convey complex information to various audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build effective relationships and partnerships.
  • Ability to design and lead innovative approaches to creating inclusive environments.
  • A minimum of three years of experience leading student and employee affinity groups and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Ability to utilize data to inform strategic decisions regarding opportunities and challenges of diversity and inclusion initiatives and programs to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the National Association of Diversity Officers Higher Education's Standards of Professional Practice.
