The Opportunity
Location: Los Gatos, CA

The Studio Media Algorithms team is at the cutting edge of algorithmic advancement, enhancing and facilitating the creation of films, television shows, games, and other multimedia content. The work undertaken by this team unlocks new creative avenues for storytellers and streamlines the content creation process, ultimately bringing joy to viewers globally.
We are in search of a Research Scientist with proven expertise in deep machine learning and proficiency in one or more areas including computer vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP), and computer graphics (CG). This role involves researching and developing algorithms and models to improve the tools utilized by content creators throughout the production lifecycle, encompassing visual effects (VFX), animation, and gaming. Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing, implementing, and assessing algorithmic solutions for various challenges in the VFX, animation, and gaming sectors, advancing the state of the art in CG and CV as necessary.
- Creating foundational machine learning models and methodologies with broad applications, contributing to our primary focus areas in media algorithms.
- Collaborating cross-functionally with engineers, scientists, artists, and product leaders to identify and prioritize opportunities and requirements.
- Providing insights into the design of our AI platform.
About You
- Research experience with a successful history of delivering high-quality results and/or academic publications in leading ML, CV, CG, or NLP forums.
- Expertise in designing and training deep learning architectures for media comprehension and generation, with a comprehensive understanding of deep learning methods and literature.
- Familiarity with contemporary computer graphics techniques.
- Strong mathematical skills with knowledge of statistical methods and optimization.
- Extensive experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Proficient programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or C++.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for collaboration with both technical and non-technical partners.
- Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
Bonus Qualifications
- Innovative work on modern generative methods and their foundational components.
- Experience in visual effects, gaming, or animation, with a track record of developing tools or solutions in these or closely related fields.
- Familiarity with computer graphics and VFX tools and game engines such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Autodesk Maya, or Nuke.
- Knowledge of 3D vision and reconstruction.
Our compensation structure is based solely on an annual salary; we do not offer bonuses. Each year, you can choose how much of your compensation you wish to allocate between salary and stock options. To determine your competitive compensation, we consider market indicators along with your specific job family, background, skills, and experience. The salary range for this role is $170,000 - $720,000. Netflix provides a comprehensive benefits package, including health plans, mental health support, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching, stock option programs, disability programs, health savings and flexible spending accounts, family-forming benefits, and life and serious injury benefits. We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off, which can be used for vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
