Team Overview: Our Human-Aware Interaction and Learning team is seeking talented Research Scientists specializing in robotic perception and computer vision. This role is part of a broader initiative focused on exploring human-robot interaction in driving environments.

Key Challenge: We aim to address a critical question in artificial intelligence: how can machines safely and effectively interact with humans to enhance their capabilities?

Role Responsibilities:

  • Conduct pioneering research in perception for robotic systems, addressing significant practical challenges and validating findings through real-world benchmarks.
  • Implement cutting-edge perception algorithms to operate in real-time within high-performance systems, including planning and control.
  • Advance the field of Human-Machine Interaction and Shared Control in both robotics and driving contexts.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers across TRI, Toyota, and our academic partners.
  • Stay informed on the latest developments in computer vision and robotic perception.
  • Present research findings through various channels, including internal communications, international conferences, and open-source contributions.
  • Lead partnerships with external research institutions and mentor research interns.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering).
  • Ph.D. or significant expertise in a relevant area (Computer Vision, Robotics).
  • Proficient in scientific Python, Unix, and robotic frameworks (e.g., ROS2.0), with experience in deep learning frameworks (preferably PyTorch).
  • Strong background in practical computer vision for robotic systems, including geometric computer vision techniques.
  • Demonstrated success in publishing research in high-impact conferences and journals.
  • Able to identify, propose, and lead new research initiatives, collaborating effectively with peers.
  • Passionate about developing human-centric artificial intelligence for societal benefit.
  • A reliable team player who values integrity and openness.

Compensation: The expected pay range for this position is between $151,800 and $210,000/year for California-based roles, subject to variation based on individual factors.
