Job Summary

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Library Specialist I to join our team at the Central Library. As a key member of the Adult Services Department, you will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service, performing complex reference work, and supervising assigned staff and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex reference work by locating or directing patrons to appropriate resources for their inquiries.
  • Supervise assigned staff and volunteers, including training, assigning, and evaluating work, and counseling.
  • Train the public and staff in the use of library materials and equipment.
  • Maintain the library collection, including filing supplements, catalogs, and books, and maintaining periodical collections and newspapers.
  • Supervise library operations as directed by the supervisor, assist in opening and closing the library, and recommend items for purchase for patrons.
  • Supervise all financial transactions, including fines, fees, lost items, printing requiring debit cards, and patron financial records.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot library computers, software, and other equipment.
  • Coordinate and present special programs, activities, events, and/or workshops, and create and/or provide press releases, posters, flyers, displays, book displays, and publicity to promote same.
  • Supervise and/or participate in compiling statistics, maintain information to support periodic and special reports, and maintain and supervise supply inventory for the library.
  • Organize City Council/Planning Commission, City Code, and Zoning Ordinance packets, and maintain bulletin boards.
  • Record and distribute mail.
  • Attend or conduct staff, committee, or other professional meetings to exchange information.
  • Supervise public service coverage at the main service desk and assist in the Circulation and the Youth & Family Services Departments when needed.
Requirements
  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree, and a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience, including some supervisory experience.
  • License and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards are required.
  • Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Automated circulation systems highly desired.
  • Public library related experience desired.
  • It is preferred that the Experience Requirements stated above are related and timely (within the last five years) with some supervisory experience.
