Washington, Washington, D.C., United States OpenAI Full time

About the Team

At OpenAI, our mission is to ensure that artificial intelligence serves the interests of all humanity. To achieve this, we prioritize effective collaboration with policymakers within the national security sector. Our Global Affairs team is dedicated to fostering genuine, cooperative relationships in these critical areas. We ensure that insights from policymakers and stakeholders shape our initiatives and work together to promote regulation, industry standards, and the safe and beneficial development of AI technologies. The U.S. Policy and Partnerships team, a vital part of the Global Affairs team, focuses on establishing and nurturing strong, trustworthy relationships with government officials, legislators, and other external stakeholders. We aim to engage all facets of the U.S. AI policymaking community while providing technical and policy expertise. Additionally, we collaborate closely with the broader Global Affairs team to build productive relationships with the public sector and other organizations that can leverage our tools.

About the Role

We are looking for an outstanding national security generalist to join our agile, high-impact team, enhancing our efforts to connect with, educate, and collaborate with national security and law enforcement officials across the U.S. government. OpenAI acknowledges the significance of long-standing, established relationships with government stakeholders, making this position crucial for building that network from the ground up.

Reporting to the National Security Lead, the National Security Associate will play a key role in developing policy and managing our relationships with essential stakeholders in the national security arena. This position requires close collaboration with colleagues on the Global Affairs Team and coordination with other departments within the organization (e.g., legal, safety, communications). The ability to work swiftly and collaboratively on complex issues in a dynamic environment is essential.

As OpenAI continues to evolve with the release of cutting-edge research and tools, you will encounter new challenges as the organization's needs change. Daily responsibilities may include communicating with U.S. government representatives, representing OpenAI at events, developing and executing engagement strategies on pressing policy matters, or preparing company leaders for public representation.

We seek a self-motivated and innovative individual with experience in building and nurturing relationships with national security stakeholders, as well as an understanding of the policymaking process related to technology. Experience in government, knowledge of technology-related regulations, and technical expertise concerning generative AI models are highly desirable.

This role is based in Washington, DC, and may involve frequent travel to engage with key stakeholders. We provide relocation assistance to new hires.

You will excel in this role if you:

  • Are knowledgeable about national security issues and emerging AI technologies.
  • Are an enthusiastic and effective coalition builder who enjoys working independently but also thrives as part of a high-performing, peer-led global team.
  • Enjoy coordinating and facilitating complex collaborative projects among various stakeholders while being an accountable individual contributor.
  • Are passionate about the potential of technology and the future of artificial intelligence while being mindful of its associated risks.

We are looking for a combination of:

  • Established network and credibility with national security stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal government rules, institutions, and processes, as well as key policy issues and debates related to AI.
  • Significant experience in technology policy is a plus.
  • Proven skills in coordinating and facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration.
  • Sound judgment and exceptional personal integrity.
  • Ability to execute in fast-paced and flexible environments through rapid cycles of analysis, decision-making, and action.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to convey complex technical and policy concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and project management abilities.
  • A track record of effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams and aligning a diverse range of internal and external partners.
  • Genuine concern and understanding of the impact of technology on society.
