San Francisco, California, United States Dandelion Chocolate Full time
About Us
Dandelion Chocolate is a bean-to-bar chocolate manufacturer located in San Francisco's Mission District. We produce chocolate using only two ingredients: cocoa beans and cane sugar. Our commitment to building trustworthy relationships with the producers who cultivate and ferment our beans drives our mission. As most of our visitors are new to bean-to-bar chocolate, our interactive retail experiences play a crucial role in educating them, ensuring transparency in our supply chain, and fostering appreciation for our high-quality, ethically sourced cacao products. We are currently in search of a seasoned, compassionate, and financially astute Lead Retail Operations Strategist to manage our west coast café and retail activities.

A Day in the Life
Your day starts with reviewing the previous day's sales and labor reports, noting a decline in the purchase of 3-Bar Tasting Sets last week, possibly due to a merchandising or inventory issue. You prepare a weekly summary report for your café leadership team, highlighting achievements towards your objectives, including a recent excellent store audit rating. In the afternoon, you visit one of our cafés, collaborating with the General Manager to assess operations, praising their welcoming guest interactions, organized inventory, and cleanliness. You take the opportunity to celebrate a team member's birthday and sample a new barista's mocha. After some investigation, you uncover that a new Assistant Manager has been hesitant to showcase 3-Bar Tasting Gift Sets due to a delay in receiving a new shelf sign. You assist the Assistant Manager in expediting the sign request and suggest updates to the café leadership handbook for clarity. You finalize your reports and connect with other senior leaders to validate your findings before concluding your day, prepared for tomorrow's store visit.

About You
You possess extensive retail operations experience and the emotional intelligence necessary for exceptional people management, from training and scheduling to performance evaluation across multiple locations. You are adept at analyzing data to formulate retail expansion strategies, inspecting stock areas, preparing detailed reports for board meetings, participating in menu tastings, and developing support teams (e.g., merchandising, facilities, training) to ensure optimal operations at all locations. Your experience includes crafting long-term retail strategies with empathy for the challenges faced by café staff during peak periods. Ideally, you have held significant retail leadership roles for several years, emphasizing warm hospitality, a passion for the craft food movement, and high standards for retail and food service.

Responsibilities
  • Operations and Procedures: Strengthen and enhance the brand's essence while ensuring exceptional chocolate experiences and hospitality for our guests daily. Refine and implement systems, processes, and support (training, merchandising, etc.) that will scale over the next 3-5 years, ensuring each café operates efficiently, even in the absence of management. Ensure supplies are maintained in good condition and address facility issues promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Support General Managers: This is a hands-on role; regular store visits are essential to uphold high standards. Your behind-the-scenes efforts guarantee that every guest receives a warm welcome and accurate information about our chocolate origins.
  • Strategy & Planning: Serve as the primary leader for inquiries regarding Dandelion's retail strategy, forecasting, and quarterly objectives. Collaborate with executive leadership to develop retail expansion plans aligned with Dandelion's values and mission.
  • Financial Analysis: Monitor and achieve revenue targets, labor objectives, and contribution goals while ensuring positive customer experiences and team satisfaction. Assist store leaders in understanding financial plans to adapt quickly to changing traffic patterns.
  • Guest Satisfaction: Ensure Dandelion is recognized for its hospitality; guests should feel welcomed into the craft chocolate narrative and consistently recommend our experiences. Develop retail and café experiences tailored to each location's unique clientele. Monitor and respond to feedback on review platforms to maintain high ratings.
  • Team Management: Collaborate with HR to track employee retention and utilize our leveling program to reinforce advancement pathways for retail staff. Foster unity between store teams and corporate, providing regular updates on trends and forecasts.
  • Vendor Relationships: Maintain strong relationships with external vendors, including facilities and security services, ensuring their continued support during urgent situations.
  • Other Tasks: Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Requirements
  • Management: Experience overseeing multiple functional teams with significant staff across various locations, managing retail revenue of at least $5M annually. Proficient in creating reports for executive and finance teams to assist with forecasting.
  • Technical Skills: Comfortable learning new systems, adept at interpreting sales data, and familiar with inventory management systems. Proficient in Google Suite and complex spreadsheet functions.
  • Financial Acumen: Ability to collaborate with executive and finance teams to create accurate revenue forecasts and labor plans that adapt to seasonal business fluctuations.
  • Soft Skills: Our culture emphasizes positivity, service orientation, and active listening. You can effectively communicate complex topics to various stakeholders and prioritize collaboration across teams.
Benefits
Beyond a comprehensive chocolate education, Dandelion Chocolate invests in our team and culture. All employees receive medical, vision, and dental benefits, along with the option to enroll in a 401k program, paid vacation, holiday pay, and sick leave. Additional perks include commuter benefits, local gym discounts, chocolate tasting opportunities, and potential travel to origin locations. This is a salaried, exempt position with a competitive salary range based on experience.
