Position Overview:

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, modification, planning, initiation, and management of engineering projects. This role includes the implementation and assessment of performance standards for equipment and personnel to ensure optimal operations and efficient utility usage. The mechanical systems involved encompass HVAC, plumbing, steam, chilled water, and medical gas systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive scopes, specifications, and drawings for HVAC and mechanical projects.
  • Conduct engineering quality assurance reviews for large-scale and complex construction and renovation initiatives.
  • Identify both short- and long-term capital requirements for HVAC, controls, and mechanical systems, and provide technical direction throughout project execution.
  • Analyze data to prepare recommendations for capital and operational planning.
  • Maintain documentation necessary for accreditation through relevant regulatory bodies.

Autonomy and Leadership:

This position operates with a high degree of independence and typically acts as an engineering planner and project coordinator, utilizing both internal and external resources. The projects managed are substantial in scope and value, often requiring advanced problem-solving and negotiation skills. Additionally, this role involves overseeing the administrative functions of project staff, including consulting engineers and internal team members.

Mentorship and Communication:

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is also responsible for mentoring and developing operational staff, aligning with departmental goals and objectives. Effective communication across the health system and university administration is essential.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license with a minimum of five years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, and/or fire protection design, preferably in a healthcare environment.
  • Proven leadership experience with at least two years in construction project management.
  • Strong engineering and office software proficiency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desirable experience with hospital mechanical systems.
  • Certifications such as LEED AP BD+C, CEM, CHFM, and/or Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt are preferred.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Capability to thrive in a fast-paced, diverse, and customer-focused setting.
  • Strong diagnostic skills for identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • Valid driver's license and residency within a specified distance from the main campus.
